Northern lights in Denmark tonight
Denmark at 55-57°N magnetic latitude needs Kp 5-6 – a moderate geomagnetic storm. The G5 event of May 2024 produced sightings across the country including from Copenhagen. North Jutland near Skagen gives the best positions, facing the open Skagerrak.
How the sky looks right now
Live Kp index from NASA & NOAA, mapped to what it means across Denmark.
Low activity expected. Solar conditions are currently quiet. Chances of aurora visibility are low tonight.
How far south the glow reaches
At Kp 1, the auroral oval pushes down to ~76°N - covering every Denmark town below.
7-day outlook for Denmark
Predicted peak Kp each night, from NOAA's 3-day forecast and the 27-day solar-recurrence model.
Forecasts beyond 3 days are lower confidence - check back nightly as the outlook firms up.
Aurora visibility by town
Each spot lights up at a different Kp threshold thanks to its latitude. It comes down to the clouds.
Skagen
58°NDenmark's northernmost tip – Grenen headland.
Aalborg
57°NNorth Jutland – Jammerbugten coast, Rebild National Park.
Copenhagen
56°NNorth Zealand coast and Odsherred Peninsula.
Bornholm
55°NBaltic island – Hammerknuden north coast, Denmark's darkest island.
Three ways to do it
Skagen
Denmark's northernmost point, where the Skagerrak meets the Kattegat at the Grenen sand spit. At 57.7°N geographic – the same band as the Orkney Islands – Kp 3 is sufficient from this headland on a clear night, the lowest threshold in Denmark.
Threshold · Kp 3Aalborg
Denmark's best-positioned major city for aurora after Skagen. The Jammerbugten coast 45 minutes northwest faces north over the open North Sea, and Rebild National Park gives dark heathland 35 minutes south.
Threshold · Kp 4Bornholm
Denmark's most isolated island in the Baltic, with Bortle 3-4 dark skies on the Hammerknuden north coast. The distance from the mainland removes the background glow and gives a genuine dark-sky position.
Threshold · Kp 5Why Denmark needs a strong storm
Denmark occupies an interesting position for aurora watching. At 55-57°N magnetic latitude, it sits at the threshold where G2 storms produce visible aurora from dark coastal sites. The country has no mountainous terrain but its peninsulas and islands give excellent north-facing coastal access. North Jutland, facing the Skagerrak and the North Sea, is the country's best aurora area – Skagen at the tip sits at 57.7°N geographic, comparable to the Orkney Islands in Scotland.
Copenhagen is 300 km south of Skagen and needs stronger activity. For Copenhagen residents, the north Zealand coast at Gilleleje gives the most accessible dark-sky north-facing position – 60 km from the city. During G2+ storms, aurora is visible from Danish coastlines as a glow or band on the northern horizon. During G3-G4 events, active curtains and rays become possible.
The G5 storm of May 2024 was strong enough to put aurora over Copenhagen harbour – a once-in-a-decade event that shows how far south the lights can reach. More typically, G2 storms (Kp 5-6) produce aurora visible from Danish dark sites several times per year. Open coastal access and relatively low rural light pollution make Denmark a practical aurora destination for those who can't travel further north.

How often does the aurora appear in Denmark?
Average nights per month the Kp reached Copenhagen's threshold, from 15 years of geomagnetic data (2010–2024).
Counts the Kp threshold only – cloud cover is not included. Denmark's Atlantic-influenced weather brings frequent overcast in winter; checking the DMI cloud forecast alongside the Kp alert is essential.
Plan your trip to Denmark
React, don't plan
Denmark is a storm-chasing destination. Monitor the NOAA 3-day forecast and set up Kp alerts. When a G2+ event is forecast and the DMI cloud chart shows clear skies over north Jutland, that is the window to move.
Drive north
Skagen or the Jammerbugten coast gives the lowest threshold and best dark-sky positions. The Grenen headland at Skagen faces north over the Skagerrak – in clear conditions with a G2 storm, aurora is visible here on most active nights.
