Kp index guide Kp 5 locations

Kp 5 aurora locations

Kp 5 marks the threshold of a G1 geomagnetic storm - the first level of official storm classification. At this level aurora becomes visible from northern England, southern Scotland, Ireland, and starts appearing across northern Europe including the Netherlands, northern Germany, and Denmark. During the current solar maximum, Kp 5 events are relatively common and represent some of the most photographed aurora events of recent years.

Kp 5 is a step up from Kp 4 and below Kp 6.

Kp 5+ aurora locations in Scandinavia

All of Scandinavia - Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Denmark, and the Faroe Islands - is within range at Kp 5. Copenhagen becomes viable at this level.

Kp 5+ aurora locations in the UK and Ireland

Kp 5 brings aurora to northern England including Northumberland, the Lake District, and the northeast coast. Donegal and Clare in Ireland can see aurora from dark, north-facing coastal positions.

Kp 5+ aurora locations in North America

Kp 5 extends coverage across the northern US tier - Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and the Pacific Northwest including Oregon and Washington. The aurora zone now reaches much of the populated northern United States.

Kp 5+ aurora locations in central Europe

Northern Germany - Flensburg, Hamburg, and the island of Rügen in the Baltic - is within range at Kp 5. Combined with the Baltic states, central Europe now has a growing list of viable locations.

Aurora australis at Kp 5+

Tasmania including Hobart comes into range at Kp 5. New Zealand's Christchurch and Argentina's El Calafate are also viable, adding southern Australia to the aurora australis map.

Kp 5+ aurora in Asia

Wakkanai in northern Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost city, is within range at Kp 5. Japan's aurora zone is small but increasingly well-documented.

Near solar maximum in 2025 and 2026, Kp 5 events are more frequent than in quieter years. See the solar maximum aurora guide for what this means for viewing chances.

Locations are sorted by tonight's cloud cover - clearest conditions first. Updated every 30 minutes.

Common questions

Can you see aurora in northern England at Kp 5?
Yes. Newcastle, Northumberland, and the Lake District are all in range at Kp 5. The key is getting away from city lights. Northumberland National Park, the darkest area in England, gives the best chance. Kielder Water and Hadrian's Wall country are regularly photographed aurora locations at Kp 5-6.
What is a G1 geomagnetic storm?
G1 is the first level on the NOAA geomagnetic storm scale (G1 to G5). It corresponds to Kp 5 - the point where geomagnetic disturbance officially becomes a storm. G1 storms can cause minor satellite navigation errors, affect some power systems at high latitudes, and produce aurora visible above around 60°N. They are the most common storm type.
Can you see aurora in Ireland at Kp 5?
Donegal and the northwest of Ireland are the best bets at Kp 5. Malin Head, Ireland's northernmost point, sits at around 55°N magnetic latitude where Kp 5 can produce a clear arc on the northern horizon. County Mayo and County Sligo can also produce aurora at Kp 5 from west-facing Atlantic coast locations.
Can you see aurora in the Netherlands at Kp 5?
Occasionally. The Netherlands sits at around 53-54°N magnetic latitude - near the southernmost edge of Kp 5 visibility. On a clear night with Kp 5 and a dark, northward-facing horizon (such as the Wadden Sea coast or Texel island), faint aurora is sometimes visible on the horizon. A camera with a long exposure will often capture it before the eye does.
How often does Kp reach 5?
During the current solar maximum (2024-2026), Kp 5 events have been occurring roughly 3-6 times per month. Prior to this solar maximum they were less frequent - perhaps once a month on average over the full cycle. The current elevated solar activity makes Kp 5 events a near-regular occurrence for aurora watchers in northern Europe.
