Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Stavanger's latitude.
Outside November through January, twilight is too bright for aurora viewing even during significant storms. The season is short, but the equinox months on either side of winter can extend it slightly when storm timing aligns.

Stavanger has a population of around 132,000 in the city itself, and roughly 240,000 across the wider Stavanger-Sandnes urban area - big enough that it's easy to assume it shares the aurora reputation of Bergen or Tromsø further north. It doesn't. At close to 59°N magnetic latitude, Stavanger sits south of Oslo, and aurora here is a genuine but infrequent event tied to strong geomagnetic storms rather than a regular clear-night occurrence.
When to go
September to March gives the dark nights needed, but the more important variable is storm timing, not season. A Kp of 5-6 on the 0-to-9 geomagnetic activity scale is the level to watch for, with a confident, colourful display typically needing Kp 7 or above - a G3-class storm. Given how infrequent that is, this isn't a destination to build an aurora-focused trip around; treat any sighting as a bonus if you're already in the area.
Getting there and getting around
Stavanger Airport (Sola) has direct connections from across Europe; you can compare flights to Norway as a starting point for planning. Once there, a hire car gets you out to the Jæren coast or Randaberg peninsula quickly if a storm alert comes in; you can compare car rental prices for the trip out.
Where to watch
The Jæren coast, 20-30 km south of the city, gives open, low-lying farmland stretching to a North Sea horizon - the most practical option once you know a strong storm is underway. The Randaberg peninsula, just northwest of the centre, is a closer fallback for shorter notice, at the cost of slightly more residual light. Neither is an officially designated dark-sky site; both simply benefit from open terrain and distance from the city core.
What to expect, honestly
This is the most honest framing for Stavanger: it's not a regular aurora destination, and treating it as one will lead to disappointment. The May 2024 G5 storm - the strongest since 2003 - did produce aurora as far south as Kristiansand, with local Stavanger media covering the event, so it's a real possibility during major storms, not a theoretical one.
