Live aurora forecast

Northern lights Lithuania tonight

Lithuania at 55–56°N magnetic latitude is better positioned for aurora than many expect — the same latitude as Moscow and the Scottish Borders. Kp 5 is the threshold from Klaipėda and the Curonian Spit. The north-facing Baltic coast is the country's best asset for aurora watching. Select a location for a local forecast and dark sky guide.

Aurora visibility in Lithuania

Best time to see the northern lights in Lithuania

Aurora in Lithuania requires significant geomagnetic storms. Only the deep mid-winter months offer nights dark and long enough for viewing, and only during periods of elevated Kp.

Lithuania aurora at a glance

The Curonian Spit is Lithuania's standout aurora asset. This 97-km sand dune peninsula - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - separates the Baltic Sea from the Curonian Lagoon. The western shore faces north-west over open sea and the dune crests give elevated positions with 180-degree sky views. In winter the spit is quiet outside Nida village, with minimal artificial light anywhere on the peninsula. Driving south from Klaipėda by ferry, observers can position themselves on the dune ridges for a north-facing horizon with the lagoon behind.

Lithuania is the southern end of the Baltic aurora circuit that runs through Latvia's Cape Kolka and Estonia's Lahemaa coast. The threshold rises as you move south - but during moderate storms, all three Baltic states can see aurora on the same night from their respective north-facing coasts.

Common questions

Northern lights in Lithuania - the Curonian Spit, Klaipėda, and the Baltic coast.

Can you see the northern lights in Lithuania?
Yes, during moderate geomagnetic storms. Lithuania sits at 55–56°N magnetic latitude - the same band as Moscow and the north of England - and Kp 5 from Klaipėda and the Baltic coast. The Curonian Spit faces north and west across open sea, giving an unobstructed horizon that is unusual at this latitude. The G5 storm of May 2024 produced aurora photographed from Lithuania's coast and parks.
What Kp is needed for aurora in Lithuania?
Kp 5 from Klaipėda and the Baltic coast - G1 geomagnetic storms reach Lithuania several times per year during an active solar period. Kp 6 for aurora visible from Vilnius in the east. The west coast position helps: sea-facing horizons let observers detect lower-altitude aurora that would be blocked by trees or buildings on inland sites. During the current solar maximum, Lithuania has seen confirmed aurora events multiple times.
Where is the best place to see aurora in Lithuania?
The Curonian Spit - the narrow sand dune peninsula that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea - is Lithuania's best aurora location. The north-facing Baltic coast here looks across open water toward Latvia and Estonia. The spit is 97 km long and largely forested, with UNESCO World Heritage status for its dramatic moving dunes. Nida at the southern end of the Lithuanian section is a small resort village with minimal winter light pollution. Palanga beach north of Klaipėda is more accessible and faces north over the Baltic.
How does Lithuania compare to Latvia and Estonia for aurora?
Estonia is clearly ahead: Tallinn at 60°N magnetic needs only Kp 3–4 and Lahemaa National Park is a genuinely strong aurora destination. Latvia at 58°N (Riga) needs Kp 4–5. Lithuania at 55–56°N needs Kp 5. The pattern follows latitude - moving north along the Baltic coast reduces the threshold by about 1 Kp per degree. For a Baltic aurora circuit, start in Estonia, continue to Latvia's Cape Kolka, and Lithuania's Curonian Spit is the southern end of the route.
When is aurora season in Lithuania?
September to March. Adequate darkness from late September. Lithuania has a Baltic maritime climate - cloud cover is significant through winter, but the coast often clears when inland areas remain overcast. The equinox months of September and March are geomagnetically the most active. Summer nights are too bright: Lithuania is far enough north that June nights never reach full astronomical darkness.
