Kp 8 aurora locations

Kp 8 is a G4 severe geomagnetic storm - rare and spectacular. At this level aurora has been photographed from Spain, Italy, the south of France, Texas, Florida, and parts of the southern hemisphere. G4 storms occur only a few times per solar cycle. When one arrives, the entire night sky at mid-latitudes can display aurora. The G4 event of May 2024 produced some of the most widely photographed aurora displays in decades.

Kp 8 is a step up from Kp 7 and below Kp 9.

Kp 8+ aurora locations in Scandinavia

All of Scandinavia is deep inside the auroral oval at Kp 8. Conditions at this level produce the strongest and most active aurora seen from the region.

Kp 8+ aurora locations in the UK and Ireland

All of the UK and Ireland are within the extended oval at Kp 8. Even southern England is well within range.

Kp 8+ aurora locations in North America

Most of the populated United States is within the auroral zone at Kp 8. The aurora reaches well south of the usual high-latitude belt.

Kp 8+ aurora locations in central Europe

All central European locations are deep within the oval at Kp 8. Paris and further south are potentially in range.

Aurora australis at Kp 8+

The southern hemisphere oval extends further north at Kp 8. More of Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa can see aurora australis.

Kp 8+ aurora in Asia

Japan's Hokkaido locations are well within the auroral zone at Kp 8.

Locations are sorted by tonight's cloud cover - clearest conditions first. Updated every 30 minutes.

Common questions

What is a G4 severe storm?
G4 is the fourth level on the NOAA geomagnetic storm scale. It corresponds to Kp 8 - an exceptional level of geomagnetic disturbance. G4 storms can cause widespread power system voltage problems, interrupt satellite and GPS operations, and push the auroral oval deep into mid-latitudes. Aurora becomes visible across most of Europe and the continental USA, including locations that rarely or never see it.
Where can you see aurora at Kp 8?
At Kp 8 the aurora extends to around 45°N magnetic latitude. That covers all of the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, northern Italy, most of the USA, and parts of the southern hemisphere including Tasmania and southern South America. This is the level at which aurora reaches its widest regular audience.
How rare is a G4 storm?
G4 storms (Kp 8) occur roughly 4-6 times per solar cycle - that is 4-6 events over 11 years. During solar maximum the probability rises; the May 2024 event was a G5 (Kp 9) that included a sustained Kp 8 period. Outside of solar maximum years, G4 events are exceptional.
Can the southern hemisphere see aurora at Kp 8?
Yes. Tasmania, southern Victoria in Australia, and southern South America (particularly Ushuaia and Patagonia) can all see aurora australis at Kp 8. New Zealand's South Island is also within range. The May 2024 storm produced confirmed aurora sightings across Tasmania, New Zealand, and as far north as Sydney in extraordinary conditions.
How do I get alerted for a G4 event?
Set up aurora alerts through auroratonight.space. The site monitors NASA DONKI data and generates alerts when Kp thresholds are forecast. NOAA Space Weather Center also issues 3-day forecasts and alerts for G3+ events. During major storm events, the Kp rises quickly - sometimes faster than forecasts predict - so checking the live forecast regularly during elevated space weather periods is worthwhile.
