Northern lights Hokkaido tonight

Hokkaido spans 43-45° magnetic latitude - Japan's only realistic aurora island. The threshold ranges from Kp 5 at Wakkanai in the north to Kp 6-7 in central and southern Hokkaido. Shiretoko Peninsula gives Japan's best dark sky position at Bortle 2. The solar maximum of 2025-2026 has produced more aurora events visible from the island than any period in two decades. Best season: October to March.

What Kp is needed here?

Hokkaido sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 44°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 6 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.

At Kp 6, visibility is possible from Hokkaido but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near Hokkaido

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.

Biei plateau and Shirogane area

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 3-4 - Rural sky Near Biei - approximately 2 hours from Sapporo by car

The Biei plateau in central Hokkaido sits at 200-400 m elevation with farmland and rolling hills that limit light scatter. The area north of Biei town opens toward the Daisetsuzan massif with a clear northern horizon. Bortle 3-4 across the plateau. The artificial pond lighting at the Blue Pond is switched off at night outside the tourist season, making the approach road a quiet dark sky access point. The main limitation is the glow of Asahikawa 30 km to the north-west. Accessible by car year-round on cleared roads.

Shiretoko Peninsula

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky Near Utoro - approximately 3 hours from Abashiri by car

A UNESCO World Heritage site at the northeast tip of Hokkaido. The peninsula road ends at Kamuiwakka Falls; the interior is bear country accessible only on guided tours or by boat. From the Utoro side, north-facing views over the Sea of Okhotsk are completely unobstructed. Bortle 2 conditions prevail across the peninsula - the nearest town with significant lighting is Abashiri, 90 km to the south-west, blocked by the Shiretoko range. This is the darkest accessible position on Hokkaido by sky quality. The drive makes it a dedicated outing rather than a spontaneous stop.

Daisetsuzan National Park highlands

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2-3 - Excellent dark sky Near Asahidake - approximately 2 hours from Sapporo via Asahikawa

Japan's largest national park covers 2,267 km² of volcanic highland. The Asahidake Ropeway reaches 1,600 m where the tree line ends and the horizon opens in all directions. Light pollution from Asahikawa to the west is reduced by the intervening ridge. The north-facing upper slopes give one of the highest accessible observation points in central Hokkaido. Bortle 2-3 at elevation. The ropeway operates through winter for backcountry skiers, giving practical nighttime access. Sounkyo and Tenninkyo gorges on the eastern flanks are lower but equally dark.

Best time to see the northern lights in Hokkaido

At 44°N magnetic latitude, Hokkaido sits at the lower end of regular aurora territory. Only the deep mid-winter months of November through January offer nights dark enough for aurora to be visible, and only then when a significant geomagnetic storm pushes the auroral oval this far south.

Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Hokkaido's latitude.

Outside November through January, twilight is too bright for aurora viewing even during significant storms. The season is short, but the equinox months on either side of winter can extend it slightly when storm timing aligns.

Common questions

Aurora in Hokkaido - thresholds by location, best dark sites, and solar maximum context.

Can you see the northern lights in Hokkaido?
Yes, during strong geomagnetic storms. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach 5-6 or above depending on where in Hokkaido you are. Wakkanai at 45° magnetic latitude in the far north requires Kp 5. Sapporo and central Hokkaido need Kp 6-7. The solar maximum of 2025-2026 has produced several events strong enough for aurora photographs across the island - more than any period since Solar Cycle 23.
Where in Hokkaido is best for seeing aurora?
Wakkanai at the northern tip gives the lowest threshold - Kp 5 is often enough from Cape Soya, Japan's northernmost point. Northeast Hokkaido around Abashiri and Shiretoko Peninsula gives Kp 6 and Bortle 2 sky. Central Hokkaido around Furano and Daisetsuzan needs Kp 6-7 but offers elevated highland positions. Sapporo is convenient as a base but needs Kp 7 before the aurora is bright enough above the city's light dome.
What Kp is needed for aurora in Hokkaido?
Kp 5-6 from Wakkanai. Kp 6 from northeast Hokkaido. Kp 6-7 from central Hokkaido and Sapporo. The figure most commonly quoted - Kp 5-6 - is accurate for the northern extreme but not for most of the island. Anyone planning an aurora trip to central or southern Hokkaido should treat Kp 6-7 as the working threshold.
When is the best time for aurora in Hokkaido?
October to March. The nights are long and in winter the Sea of Okhotsk coast in northeast Hokkaido clears well under Siberian high pressure. October and March have higher geomagnetic activity on average due to the Russell-McPherron effect near the equinoxes. In January and February, cold high-pressure nights from the north-west produce excellent sky transparency across the island, though coastal fog can affect Abashiri and the Okhotsk coast.
How has the solar maximum affected aurora in Hokkaido?
The 2025-2026 solar maximum has produced more frequent strong geomagnetic storms than any period since Solar Cycle 23. Several events between 2024 and 2026 produced aurora visible from across Hokkaido, attracting significant attention across Japan and Asia. The level of activity above Kp 5 has been high enough that monitoring the NOAA space weather forecast during any winter visit to Hokkaido and having dark site access planned in advance is a practical strategy, not an optimistic one.
