What Kp is needed here?

New York State sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 52°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 5-6 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.

At Kp 5-6, visibility is possible from New York State but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near New York State

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.

Adirondack Park - Long Lake / Blue Mountain Lake

Get directions ↗
Bortle 2 220 miles / 3 hr 30 min from NYC

The Adirondacks contain the largest designated wilderness area east of the Mississippi. Long Lake and Blue Mountain Lake sit at the park's interior, roughly at 44°N geographic latitude with Bortle 2-3 conditions. The north-facing shores of Long Lake give open sky toward the Canadian border with no light domes to the north. Blue Mountain (1143 m) is accessible by trail and gives elevated sky access. About 3.5 hours from New York City via I-87. Autumn (September-October) before the hunting season is the most popular aurora season. The lack of western development keeps the northwest Adirondacks genuinely dark.

Tug Hill Plateau

Get directions ↗
Bortle 3 280 miles / 4 hr 30 min from NYC

A forested upland plateau west of the Adirondacks between Watertown and Utica. At 500-600 m elevation with minimal population, the plateau gives dark skies in all directions. Whetstone Gulf State Park on the plateau's south edge and the state forest roads in the interior give dark-sky access. The north-facing positions look toward Lake Ontario and Lake Erie with no significant light pollution beyond. Bortle 3. Positioned slightly farther north than the Adirondacks' southern approaches. About 5 hours from NYC, more easily reached from Buffalo or Rochester.

Allegany State Park

Get directions ↗
Bortle 3 75 miles / 1 hr 30 min from Buffalo

New York's largest state park, in the southwestern corner near the Pennsylvania border. The forested hills and valleys give Bortle 3-4 conditions with a clear northern sky. At 42°N geographic latitude it is the southernmost option but benefits from distance from Buffalo's light dome. The Red House and Quaker areas of the park give roadside sky access. Accessible from Buffalo in about 1.5 hours. A practical option for western New York residents wanting a dark sky without a long drive.

Cherry Springs State Park (Pennsylvania, 3.5 hr from NYC)

Get directions ↗
Bortle 1 260 miles / 4 hr from NYC

Just across the New York-Pennsylvania border, Cherry Springs is one of the designated International Dark Sky Parks in the northeastern USA. At 675 m elevation with Bortle 1 conditions from the main observation field, it outperforms any New York State site for darkness. It is 215 miles from Philadelphia and around 260 miles from New York City via I-78 and US-15. For New York City-based aurora chasers, Cherry Springs is the closest Bortle 1 dark sky in the region.

When to go

Best time to see the northern lights in New York State

At 52°N magnetic latitude, New York State sits at the lower end of regular aurora territory. Only the deep mid-winter months of November through January offer nights dark enough for aurora to be visible, and only then when a significant geomagnetic storm pushes the auroral oval this far south.

Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at New York State's latitude.

Outside November through January, twilight is too bright for aurora viewing even during significant storms. The season is short, but the equinox months on either side of winter can extend it slightly when storm timing aligns.

Questions

Common questions about aurora in New York State

Can you see the northern lights in New York State?
Yes, during moderate geomagnetic storms. Northern New York at ~52° geomagnetic latitude - the latitude measured from Earth's magnetic poles, which governs where aurora reaches - needs Kp 5-6. The Adirondacks' interior - Long Lake, Blue Mountain Lake - gives the state's best dark-sky positions. During the May 2024 G5 storm, aurora was widely photographed across New York State. The northern Adirondacks near the Canadian border give the best chance outside of major storm events.
Can you see the northern lights from NYC?
During exceptional geomagnetic storms. New York City sits at ~50°N magnetic latitude and needs Kp 8+ for aurora visible through the city's extreme light pollution. During the May 2024 G5 event (Kp 9), aurora was photographed from rooftops in Brooklyn and Central Park. For regular aurora events at Kp 5-6, driving 3-4 hours to the Adirondacks is needed. Northern New Jersey and Rockland County give slightly better dark sky but still need Kp 7+ for reliable viewing.
What Kp is needed for aurora in New York State?
Kp 5-6 from the Adirondack interior - Long Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, and the northwest park near the Canadian border. Kp 6-7 for aurora from the Catskills or Hudson Valley dark sky positions. Kp 7-8 for suburban NYC. Kp 8-9 for NYC itself. The Adirondacks at 44-45°N geographic (~52° geomagnetic latitude) give the state's lowest Kp threshold. Tug Hill Plateau and the northern Adirondacks are the most productive regular aurora sites in the state.
What is the best dark sky site near New York for aurora?
The Adirondack interior - specifically the Long Lake and Blue Mountain Lake area - gives the best combination of dark sky and northern latitude within New York State. Bortle 2 conditions with no light dome to the north. For an even darker site, Cherry Springs State Park in Pennsylvania (260 miles from NYC) is Bortle 1 and is the closest International Dark Sky Park to New York City. The Adirondack positions at 44°N geographic give the best latitude advantage within the state.
When is aurora season in New York State?
September to April, with September and March being the geomagnetically strongest months. The Adirondacks have excellent autumn conditions - stable high pressure, long nights from September onwards, and foliage for photography. Winter brings the longest darkness but also the highest cloud cover frequency on the northern slopes. For aurora trips, early October and mid-March are the most productive combination of darkness and reasonable weather in the Adirondacks.
