Northern lights Massachusetts tonight

Massachusetts sits at ~53°N magnetic latitude and needs Kp 5 from dark sky sites. Mount Greylock in the Berkshires at 1063 m and the outer Cape Cod coast at Provincetown are the state's best aurora positions. Boston needs Kp 7-8 but showed aurora during the May 2024 G5 storm. Best season: September to April, with the Berkshires giving the most reliable clear skies.

What Kp is needed here?

Massachusetts sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 53°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 5–6 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.

At Kp 5–6, visibility is possible from Massachusetts but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near Massachusetts

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.

Mount Greylock State Reservation

Get directions ↗
Bortle 3 130 miles / 2 hr from Boston

The highest point in Massachusetts at 1063 m, in the Berkshires near Adams. Above the tree canopy on the summit, the horizon is open in all directions with minimal nearby light pollution. The summit road gives drive-up access from spring through autumn. North-facing views from the summit extend toward Vermont with no significant light domes. Bortle 3-4. About 130 miles from Boston via I-90. The Berkshire plateau generally gives the darkest accessible sky in the state, with several state forest roads giving comparable conditions.

Cape Cod National Seashore - Provincetown

Get directions ↗
Bortle 3 115 miles / 1 hr 45 min from Boston

The outer Cape at Provincetown faces north across Cape Cod Bay toward the open Atlantic. The Province Lands dunes north of Route 6 give a very dark northern horizon - no significant settlement between the Cape tip and Nova Scotia. Bortle 3-4. The ocean horizon eliminates any ground-level light, and the north-facing beach gives the best possible viewing angle for aurora. Accessible year-round. About 115 miles from Boston via US-6.

Quabbin Reservoir

Get directions ↗
Bortle 3 85 miles / 1 hr 30 min from Boston

A large protected reservoir and forest in central Massachusetts, about 85 miles from Boston. The reservoir's undeveloped north shore gives open water views and Bortle 3 conditions, particularly from the Gate 35 and Gate 40 areas on the north edge. The lack of development for 5 km in all directions around the main reservoir basin keeps this area significantly darker than most central Massachusetts locations. Accessible via Winsor Dam and the reservation roads.

Best time to see the northern lights in Massachusetts

At 53°N magnetic latitude, Massachusetts sits at the lower end of regular aurora territory. Only the deep mid-winter months of November through January offer nights dark enough for aurora to be visible, and only then when a significant geomagnetic storm pushes the auroral oval this far south.

Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Massachusetts's latitude.

Outside November through January, twilight is too bright for aurora viewing even during significant storms. The season is short, but the equinox months on either side of winter can extend it slightly when storm timing aligns.

Common questions

Aurora in Massachusetts - Berkshires, Cape Cod, and what Kp is needed to see the lights from Boston.

Can you see the northern lights in Massachusetts?
Yes, during moderate geomagnetic storms. Massachusetts at ~53°N magnetic latitude needs Kp 5 from dark sky sites. The Berkshires in western Massachusetts and the outer Cape Cod coast are the state's best positions. During the May 2024 G5 storm, aurora was photographed across New England including from Massachusetts. For regular Kp 5-6 events, driving to Mount Greylock or Provincetown gives the best chance.
What Kp is needed for aurora in Massachusetts?
Kp 5 from genuinely dark sites - Mount Greylock in the Berkshires (Bortle 3), the Quabbin Reservoir area, or the outer Cape Cod coast. Kp 6-7 for aurora visible from Boston's northern suburbs. Kp 7+ for aurora visible from Boston itself. Massachusetts at 53°N magnetic latitude sits in a similar band to Oregon and Washington State, but the New England east coast climate means more cloud cover in winter. The Berkshires give the most reliable clear-sky frequency in the state.
Can you see aurora borealis from Boston?
During strong geomagnetic storms. Boston at ~52°N magnetic latitude and with significant light pollution needs Kp 7-8 for visible aurora. During the May 2024 G5 event, aurora was photographed from Boston Harbour and the Charles River Esplanade. For regular aurora events (Kp 5-6), driving west to the Berkshires or north to the Quabbin Reservoir area is the most productive approach. The coast at Provincetown also gives a dark north-facing horizon without a very long drive.
What is the best place to see aurora in Massachusetts?
Mount Greylock in the Berkshires gives the highest elevation and darkest accessible sky in the state. The summit's open north-facing view and 1063 m altitude make it the primary aurora destination. The outer Cape at Provincetown is a strong alternative - the north-facing ocean horizon is exceptionally dark and accessible year-round. The Quabbin Reservoir is a middle option: 85 miles from Boston, darker than the suburbs, and gives a useful north-facing water horizon.
When is aurora season in Massachusetts?
September to April. September and March are geomagnetically the most active months. Massachusetts winters are often cloudy on the coast, but the Berkshires and interior central Massachusetts see more frequent clear high-pressure periods. For aurora chasing, tracking the 3-day Kp forecast and monitoring for incoming G2-G3 storms is the most effective approach. Clear nights with northwest winds following a cold front passage tend to give the best sky transparency in New England.
