Northern lights Rebun Island tonight
Rebun Island sits at 45.3-45.5° magnetic latitude - Japan's highest inhabited position. The Kp threshold is 5-6, the lowest in Japan. Sukoton Cape at the northern tip gives Bortle Class 1-2 sky and an open view over the La Perouse Strait toward Sakhalin. Ferry access from Wakkanai takes approximately 2 hours. Aurora here is an exceptional event, not nightly - set a push notification before you travel. Best season: October to March.

What Kp is needed here?
Rebun Island sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 45°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 5–6 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.
At Kp 5–6, visibility is possible from Rebun Island but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.
Best dark sky sites near Rebun Island
Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.
Sukoton Cape (Sukoton Misaki)
Get directions ↗Sukoton Cape is the northernmost point of Rebun Island and the northernmost accessible point in Japan open to the public. From the cliff edge, the horizon faces north over the La Perouse Strait toward Sakhalin Island 43 km away. Bortle Class 1-2. There is no artificial light to the north, west, or east. The headland gives a full open sky in all directions above the sea. At Kp 5, aurora appears on the northern horizon from this position - the same threshold as Wakkanai on the mainland. A 30-40 minute drive from Kafuka on a single-lane island road. In winter (November to April), access conditions depend on snow; check locally before driving at night.
Momoiwa viewpoint
Get directions ↗The Momoiwa (Peach Rock) viewpoint on the west coast of Rebun gives an elevated position above the Sea of Japan. Bortle Class 2. The viewpoint faces west and southwest over open water. At Kp 5-6 aurora can appear in the northwest direction from this position. The car park is accessible year-round on the main island road. Less dramatic than Sukoton Cape in terms of northern horizon, but easier to reach and less exposed to north winds in winter. A practical first stop for aurora watching on arriving at the island before driving further north.
Funadomari north coast
Get directions ↗Funadomari is a small fishing community on the northern coast of Rebun Island, 5 km south of Sukoton Cape. The shore faces north over the strait. Bortle Class 1-2 - the village has minimal lighting and the few houses face away from the coast. The beach and headland at Funadomari give a ground-level position with the open strait ahead. In winter, this is a cold and exposed position - appropriate clothing and a vehicle with heating are required. The beach gives a flat foreground for wide-angle photography with aurora overhead.
Best time to see the northern lights in Rebun Island
At 45°N magnetic latitude, Rebun Island sits at the lower end of regular aurora territory. Only the deep mid-winter months of November through January offer nights dark enough for aurora to be visible, and only then when a significant geomagnetic storm pushes the auroral oval this far south.
Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Rebun Island's latitude.
Outside November through January, twilight is too bright for aurora viewing even during significant storms. The season is short, but the equinox months on either side of winter can extend it slightly when storm timing aligns.
