Aurora australis Hobart tonight

Hobart sits at 54°S magnetic latitude — Australia's lowest aurora threshold. Kp 5 is enough from South Arm Peninsula, Bruny Island, or Cockle Creek. Face south and look low on the horizon. Cockle Creek at the end of the Huon Valley is the southernmost road in Australia and one of the darkest positions accessible by car. Peak season: June to August.

What Kp is needed here?

Hobart sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 54°S. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 5 before the auroral oval expands far enough north to be visible from here.

At Kp 5, visibility is possible from Hobart but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near Hobart

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark southern horizon within reach.

South Arm Peninsula

A narrow peninsula 30 km southeast of Hobart facing south across Frederick Henry Bay and Storm Bay toward the open Southern Ocean. The tip at Calverts Hill and the beaches on the east shore give south-facing positions with minimal light pollution. The drive from Hobart takes 35 minutes via Rokeby. One of the most accessible dark sky positions from the city and frequently used by Hobart aurora photographers.

Bruny Island south coast

The southern end of Bruny Island gives some of the darkest skies within reach of Hobart. The south-facing beaches at the Adventure Bay area look out over a wide stretch of open Southern Ocean. Take the ferry from Kettering (30 minutes south of Hobart) — a 15-minute crossing. The island's south tip, Labillardiere Peninsula, faces directly south. Very little light pollution south of Adventure Bay.

Cockle Creek (South West National Park)

The southernmost accessible road in Australia. A 90-minute drive from Hobart via Huonville and Dover, the road ends at Cockle Creek in the South West National Park. The beach faces south across Recherche Bay toward Antarctica. No artificial light for many kilometres in any direction. On a clear night this is one of the darkest positions accessible by road in Australia. Aurora australis has been photographed here regularly during G1-G2 events.

Common questions

Aurora australis in Hobart — Cockle Creek, Bruny Island, and when to go.

Can you see aurora australis from Hobart?
Yes. Hobart is Australia's most accessible aurora city. At 54°S magnetic latitude, it needs Kp 5 — the same threshold as Christchurch in New Zealand. South Arm Peninsula and Bruny Island give south-facing dark sky within 30-40 minutes. Aurora australis has been seen from Hobart multiple times during the current solar cycle, including clear sightings during G2 storms (Kp 5-6). The G5 storm of May 2024 produced vivid aurora visible from the city itself.
What Kp is needed for aurora australis in Hobart?
Kp 5 from dark sites south of the city (South Arm, Bruny Island, Cockle Creek). Kp 5-6 for aurora visible from Hobart's suburban south-facing hills. At 54°S magnetic latitude, Hobart sits within range of the auroral oval during moderate G1-G2 storms. Kp 5 events occur several times per year during solar maximum, giving regular opportunities for aurora watching from southern Tasmania.
What is the best dark sky site near Hobart?
Cockle Creek at the southern end of Huon Valley is the benchmark dark sky position — the southernmost road in Australia, 90 minutes from Hobart, facing directly south with no light pollution for hundreds of kilometres. For easier access, South Arm Peninsula (35 minutes) and Bruny Island south coast (ferry + 30 minutes drive) both give south-facing ocean views with very low light pollution. All three are confirmed aurora photography locations.
When is the best time to see aurora australis in Hobart?
June to August for longest dark nights. Hobart at 42.9°S geographic latitude gets about 14 hours of darkness in mid-winter. The September equinox is statistically the most geomagnetically active time of year. Aurora is also seen in May and October when nights are long enough. The western and central Tasmanian coast can be wet in winter — the Derwent Valley and east coast tend to have clearer skies.
How does Hobart compare to other aurora destinations?
Hobart is the closest major city in Australia to the aurora threshold. At Kp 5, it sees aurora that Melbourne would need Kp 7 to see. Within the southern hemisphere, Hobart is comparable to Queenstown or Dunedin in New Zealand (both 56°S magnetic). The advantage Hobart has over equivalent-latitude New Zealand sites is the extreme dark sky of the Cockle Creek / South West National Park — some of the most intact wilderness in the Southern Hemisphere.
