Northern lights Jukkasjärvi tonight

Jukkasjärvi sits at ~68°N magnetic latitude inside the auroral oval. Kp 1–2 is sufficient on a clear night. Home to the ICEHOTEL, rebuilt each winter from Torne River ice - aurora watching over the frozen river is part of the experience. Polar night: mid-December to New Year.

What Kp is needed here?

Jukkasjärvi sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 68°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 1–2 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.

At Kp 1–2, visibility is possible from Jukkasjärvi but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near Jukkasjärvi

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.

Torne River banks

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky 1 km from ICEHOTEL - approximately 5 minute walk

The frozen Torne River runs directly past the ICEHOTEL and gives a flat, open ice surface stretching to the north with no buildings or trees blocking the sky. The bank opposite the hotel is dark in all directions. Ice harvesting in winter creates cleared areas that are ideal for aurora photography. The same river ice used to build the ICEHOTEL becomes the foreground for aurora watching in January-March.

Jukkasjärvi church area

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky 500 m from ICEHOTEL - approximately 5 minute walk

The 17th-century wooden church at Jukkasjärvi stands on the river bank in a completely dark setting. The churchyard and surrounding open ground give north-facing sky with the church as a foreground element. No artificial light reaches this position from the ICEHOTEL or the small village. The church is one of the oldest wooden buildings in northern Sweden and provides a distinctive compositional element for aurora photography.

Forest trails north of the village

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky 2 km from ICEHOTEL - approximately 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk

The boreal forest north of Jukkasjärvi opens into clearings and frozen lake edges within 2 km of the ICEHOTEL. Snow-covered fir trees frame the sky without blocking it. The road north quickly leaves any ambient light from the village. Guides from the ICEHOTEL use these clearings for snowshoe aurora walks - the proximity means guests can return quickly if conditions change.

Best time to see the northern lights in Jukkasjärvi

At 68°N magnetic latitude, Jukkasjärvi has one of the longest aurora seasons in the world. Meaningful darkness returns in late August and displays are possible on almost any clear night from September through March. Only the endless daylight of May, June, and July rules out viewing completely.

Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Jukkasjärvi's latitude.

May through July is effectively impossible for aurora viewing: the midnight sun keeps the sky bright around the clock at this latitude. No storm level, not even G5, can produce a visible display without astronomical darkness.

Common questions

Aurora watching at Jukkasjärvi - ICEHOTEL, Torne River, and getting there from Kiruna.

What is the ICEHOTEL and can you see aurora there?
The ICEHOTEL at Jukkasjärvi is the world's first hotel built from ice and snow, rebuilt each winter using ice harvested from the Torne River. It has operated since 1990. At 68°N magnetic latitude, Kp 1-2 is sufficient for aurora on a clear night. Aurora watching is built into the ICEHOTEL experience - the tundra and river banks surrounding the hotel are dark and used as standard by guides. An adjacent permanent structure, ICEHOTEL 365, runs year-round.
How does Jukkasjärvi compare to Abisko for aurora?
Both are at 68°N and both need Kp 1-2. Abisko, 90 km west, has the famous micro-climate that gives statistically more clear nights - the surrounding mountain plateau deflects cloud. Jukkasjärvi does not have this advantage and sees the same cloud patterns as surrounding Swedish Lapland. For aurora frequency, Abisko wins on clear-night probability. For the combination of the ICEHOTEL experience and aurora, Jukkasjärvi is unique - the river ice setting and the ice architecture are not available anywhere else.
What Kp is needed for aurora at Jukkasjärvi?
Kp 1-2 from the Torne River banks and the clearings north of the village. At 68°N magnetic latitude, Jukkasjärvi is inside the auroral oval. On quiet nights (Kp 1), a faint arc is typically visible to the north. Kp 2+ produces visible curtains and the river ice gives a reflective foreground. The position is equivalent to Kiruna, 20 km west, and both see the same aurora at the same Kp levels.
How do I get from Kiruna to Jukkasjärvi?
Jukkasjärvi is 20 km east of Kiruna on Road 395 along the Torne River. By taxi or hire car it is a 20-minute drive. The ICEHOTEL operates transfers from Kiruna Airport throughout the season, and from Kiruna train station. No public bus runs between the two. From the UK, flying to Kiruna via Stockholm (SAS or Norwegian) or on winter charter to Kiruna Airport is the most practical route, with the ICEHOTEL organising the final leg.
When is the best time to visit Jukkasjärvi for aurora?
November to March, coinciding with the ICEHOTEL season. Polar night in Jukkasjärvi runs from approximately 12 December to 1 January. The shoulder months of November and February-March combine good darkness with less extreme cold. March is particularly good for the ICEHOTEL - still frozen enough to be fully intact and open, but temperatures are milder and aurora remains active. The geomagnetic equinox peak in March increases storm probability.
