Northern lights Gällivare tonight

Gällivare sits at ~68°N magnetic latitude inside the auroral oval. Kp 1–2 is sufficient on a clear night. Dundret nature reserve at 820 m gives elevated dark sky above the town. Less visited than Abisko at the same latitude - the aurora conditions are equivalent. Polar night: mid-December to New Year.

What Kp is needed here?

Gällivare sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 68°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 1–2 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.

At Kp 1–2, visibility is possible from Gällivare but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near Gällivare

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.

Dundret nature reserve

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky 5 km from Gällivare - approximately 10 minute drive

The 820 m Dundret fell above Gällivare is the primary dark sky position for the area. A small ski resort operates here in winter, with lifts that provide easy elevated access. At 820 m the summit is above valley mist and gives 360° open fell horizon. The Dundret nature reserve covers the surrounding fell plateau - designated for its open tundra and dark conditions. One of the highest accessible aurora positions in Swedish Lapland.

Vassara lake

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky 20 km from Gällivare - approximately 20 minute drive

A north-facing lake east of town, frozen from November to April. The ice surface gives open horizon with no settlement lights on the far shore. Forest roads reaching the lake are dark immediately once outside the town boundary. A flat position good for aurora photography with ice foreground - the lake is large enough that the town lights do not reach across the surface to the far shore positions.

Muddus National Park

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 1–2 - Excellent dark sky 35 km from Gällivare - approximately 30 minute drive

One of Sweden's oldest and largest national parks, covering ancient old-growth forest south of Gällivare. No settlements within the park boundary. The boreal forest is among the least disturbed in Sweden and the darkest positions are at the park edge. Winter access is by ski or snowshoe - the forest roads are not all ploughed. For guests with appropriate equipment, conditions inside the park approach Bortle Class 1.

Best time to see the northern lights in Gällivare

At 68°N magnetic latitude, Gällivare has one of the longest aurora seasons in the world. Meaningful darkness returns in late August and displays are possible on almost any clear night from September through March. Only the endless daylight of May, June, and July rules out viewing completely.

Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Gällivare's latitude.

May through July is effectively impossible for aurora viewing: the midnight sun keeps the sky bright around the clock at this latitude. No storm level, not even G5, can produce a visible display without astronomical darkness.

Common questions

Aurora watching from Gällivare - Dundret fell, Muddus National Park, and Swedish Lapland.

Is Gällivare good for aurora?
Yes. Gällivare sits at 68°N magnetic latitude inside the auroral oval - the same band as Abisko and Kiruna. Kp 1-2 is sufficient on a clear night. The Dundret fell at 820 m gives elevated dark sky immediately above the town. Gällivare sees significantly fewer tourists than Abisko, which means guides and accommodation are less booked-out during active periods. For a less commercially busy aurora experience at the same latitude, Gällivare is a practical choice.
How does Gällivare compare to Abisko for aurora?
Both are at 68°N and both need Kp 1-2. Abisko has the famous micro-climate that gives more clear nights than surrounding areas - a genuine advantage. Gällivare has Dundret at 820 m, which is higher than anything accessible at Abisko. In terms of aurora frequency on a given clear night, the two are equivalent. The difference is weather probability: Abisko is statistically clearer. The difference in tourism intensity is large - Gällivare is far less visited and accommodation is easier to find on short notice.
What is the Dundret nature reserve?
Dundret is a 820 m fell directly above Gällivare, managed as a nature reserve for its open tundra habitat. A small ski resort on its slopes gives winter access by lift. The summit gives 360° dark sky - the town lights below disappear once above the ridgeline. The reserve covers the fell plateau and surrounding forest with no permanent structures at altitude. Aurora guides from Gällivare use the fell as the primary elevated viewing position.
What Kp is needed for aurora at Gällivare?
Kp 1-2 from Dundret fell summit and the lake positions east of town. At 68°N magnetic latitude, Gällivare is inside the auroral oval. On quiet geomagnetic nights (Kp 1), a faint arc is typically visible to the north from the fell. Kp 2+ produces active curtains and rays. The 820 m elevation of Dundret puts you above any valley cloud that might form at lower altitudes.
How do I get to Gällivare?
Gällivare has a small regional airport (GEV) with connections to Stockholm (Amapola Flyg / SAS) year-round. The Inlandsbanan railway does not reach Gällivare directly - the main line from Stockholm goes via Kiruna, with Gällivare as the next stop east (about 1 hour 20 minutes from Kiruna by rail). By road, Gällivare is 120 km east of Kiruna on Road E10 and Road 97. Most visitors fly to Kiruna and drive or take the train east.
