Best time to see the aurora australis in Torres del Paine
At 40°S magnetic latitude, Torres del Paine sits at the outer edge of regular aurora australis territory. Only the southern winter months, May through July, occasionally bring storms powerful enough to push the oval this far north. Outside this window, there is insufficient darkness for aurora to be visible.
Activity peaks around the March and September equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. These windows produce the strongest aurora australis events of the year for observers at this latitude.
Outside May through July, twilight prevents aurora visibility even during significant geomagnetic storms. The season is short, but equinox months on either side of winter can extend it when timing is favourable.

The catch for aurora specifically: at roughly 51°S, Torres del Paine sits further north of Punta Arenas, and geomagnetic latitude keeps it there: the park sits at 40°S against the city's 42°S. Its threshold is a step lower all the same, Kp 5 against Kp 6.
When to go
Aurora here is storm-driven, not seasonal - it depends on a Kp 5 event reaching this far from the pole, which can happen at any time of year, but only shows up against a dark sky. May to August gives the longest nights, though winter also brings more limited park access: only three refugios stay open, solo hiking isn't permitted, and some trek routes close with snow. November to March is Patagonia's tourist high season with much shorter nights, which works against aurora-watching regardless of storm strength.
Getting there and getting around
Fly into Santiago (SCL), then take a domestic connection to Carlos Ibáñez del Campo International Airport (PUQ) in Punta Arenas; you can compare flights to Punta Arenas. From there it's about a 4.5-5.5 hour drive to the park, or roughly 2 hours from Puerto Natales, the closer gateway town most visitors base themselves in. Torres del Paine needs a stronger storm than its more famous neighbour Punta Arenas - a real trade-off for a park that's otherwise about as dark as anywhere in South America. Treat this as a place to visit for the scenery first, with aurora as a genuine bonus on the nights a strong enough storm arrives. During the May 2024 G5 storm, aurora was widely reported across the broader Magallanes region including Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales.
