What Kp is needed here?

Saariselkä sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 68°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 1–2 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.

At Kp 1–2, visibility is possible from Saariselkä but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near Saariselkä

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.

Kaunispää fell summit

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky 3 km from Saariselkä village - approximately 10 minute drive

The highest point of the Saariselkä fell area at 438 m. A road leads to the summit where a café operates in winter. Open 360-degree sky above the treeline The 360-degree sky above the treeline gives an unobstructed north horizon - one of the cleaner fell positions in the area.

Urho Kekkonen National Park

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky 5 km from Saariselkä village - approximately 10 minute drive

The national park surrounding Saariselkä gives Bortle 2-3 conditions across a vast wilderness. The frozen lake shores and open fell plateau within the park are the best sky positions. Guided snowshoe and snowmobile aurora excursions depart regularly from the village.

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky 30 km from Saariselkä - approximately 25 minute drive

About 30 km east of Saariselkä. The resort with glass igloos and log cabins is famous for aurora watching from bed. The site itself is dark - surrounded by pine forest with open sky above the igloo field. One of the most booked aurora experiences in Europe.

When to go

Best time to see the northern lights in Saariselkä

At 68°N magnetic latitude, Saariselkä has one of the longest aurora seasons in the world. Meaningful darkness returns in late August and displays are possible on almost any clear night from September through March. Only the endless daylight of May, June, and July rules out viewing completely.

Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Saariselkä's latitude.

May through July is effectively impossible for aurora viewing: the midnight sun keeps the sky bright around the clock at this latitude. No storm level, not even G5, can produce a visible display without astronomical darkness.

Questions

Common questions about aurora in Saariselkä

Why is Saariselkä Finland's best aurora destination?
Saariselkä sits at ~68°N magnetic latitude inside the auroral oval, where Kp 1-2 produces visible aurora on clear nights. The fell (tunturi) landscape gives open sky above the treeline with Bortle 2-3 conditions across the Urho Kekkonen National Park. The village has excellent accommodation infrastructure - including multiple glass igloo operators - and is dark enough that aurora is visible almost directly from the hotel window on active nights.
What Kp is needed for aurora in Saariselkä?
Kp 1-2 from the Kaunispää fell summit or the open fell plateau. At 68°N magnetic latitude, Saariselkä is inside the auroral oval - the band where the aurora is most frequently and intensely active. Even on geomagnetically quiet nights (Kp 1), a faint arc is often visible on clear nights. Kp 2+ produces active displays.
What are the best glass igloos near Saariselkä?
Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort about 30 km east is the original and best-known. The resort operates both thermal glass igloos and larger wooden cottages, plus a massive snow restaurant. In Saariselkä itself, several hotels have aurora cabins or heated glass-roofed lounges. For more affordable options, smaller operators have opened glass pods across the fell area - search for "aurora cabin Saariselkä" for current options.
When is polar night in Saariselkä?
Polar night in Saariselkä runs from approximately 25 November to 18 January - about 55 days of no direct sunlight. During this period it is dark throughout the day, giving the maximum possible window for aurora. The kaamos (polar twilight period just outside full polar night) extends from late October to late January, with only a brief blue twilight around midday.
How do I get to Saariselkä?
Fly to Ivalo Airport (IVL), about 25 km north of Saariselkä. Direct flights from Helsinki (Finnair, Norwegian) run year-round with extra winter capacity. Several UK airports have seasonal direct winter charter flights to Ivalo. From Ivalo airport, taxis and resort shuttle services cover the transfer. Saariselkä itself is a small village - a hire car is useful for exploring the surrounding fell area.
