Northern lights Levi tonight

Levi sits at ~68°N magnetic latitude inside the auroral oval. Kp 1–2 is sufficient for a display on a clear night. As Finnish Lapland's largest ski resort, Levi combines fell summit aurora with glass igloo accommodation and direct UK charter flights. Polar night: late November to mid-January.

What Kp is needed here?

Levi sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 68°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 1–2 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.

At Kp 1–2, visibility is possible from Levi but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near Levi

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.

Levi fell and Pallastunturi

Levi fell rises 531 m above sea level - the highest point in the area and above the treeline. A gondola or snowcat takes you to the summit. The Pallastunturi fells 50 km north give even darker conditions with Bortle 2 skies and open tundra horizon. The fell plateau is the primary aurora-watching position for Levi guests.

Lake Äkäslompolo

The lake directly beside Levi village freezes solid from December. The wide flat ice surface gives an unobstructed 360-degree sky view with no trees in the way. A 5-minute walk from most Levi accommodation. Aurora reflects beautifully on the ice surface and gives great photography compositions.

Levi glass igloo resorts

Multiple glass igloo and aurora cabin operators have bases in and around Levi. Levin Iglut and similar resorts position heated glass-roofed pods on the fell slopes with north-facing sky views. Watching aurora from inside a heated glass pod is the most common reason people choose Levi - the resort infrastructure here rivals Kakslauttanen for choice and quality.

Common questions

Aurora watching in Levi - glass igloos, ski resort aurora, and the fell landscape.

Is Levi good for seeing the northern lights?
Yes - Levi sits at ~68°N magnetic latitude inside the auroral oval, where Kp 1-2 is enough for a visible display on a clear night. As a purpose-built ski and aurora resort, the infrastructure is excellent: glass igloos, guided snowmobile aurora tours, and the fell summit all add up to the most practical combination of aurora access and ski infrastructure in Finnish Lapland.
What Kp is needed to see aurora from Levi?
Kp 1-2 from the Levi fell summit or the lake shore. At 68°N magnetic latitude, Levi sits inside the auroral oval - the ring of maximum aurora activity. Even on quiet nights (Kp 1), a faint arc is often visible. Kp 2+ produces active curtains and rays above the fell.
What are the best glass igloos near Levi?
Levin Iglut on the fell slope is the best-known operator in the immediate Levi area, with heated glass pods looking north across the fell. Several other operators offer aurora cabins with glass or transparent roof sections within Levi village. Levi is more compact than Kakslauttanen near Saariselkä - which means shorter distances between accommodation and viewing spots - making it easier to act quickly when aurora appears.
How does Levi compare to Saariselkä for aurora?
Both are at 68°N and both need Kp 1-2. Levi is a ski resort with more alpine infrastructure: gondola, ski lifts, and a larger selection of hotels alongside the glass igloos. Saariselkä is more of a wilderness fell village with the national park directly adjacent. For dedicated aurora watching with skiing, Levi is better. For a more remote wilderness feel, Saariselkä and Kakslauttanen win. Aurora frequency and intensity are essentially identical at both.
When is polar night in Levi?
Polar night in Levi runs from approximately 30 November to 11 January - about 40 days without the sun rising above the horizon. This is slightly shorter than the polar night at Saariselkä further north. The kaamos period (polar twilight just outside full polar night) extends from late October to late January, with only a brief blue glow at midday. Winter darkness is extreme and the aurora window is open around the clock.
How do I get to Levi?
The closest airport is Kittilä Airport (KTT), about 15 km from Levi. Direct winter charter flights operate from multiple UK airports (London, Manchester, Edinburgh) throughout the ski season. Finnair and Norwegian connect through Helsinki. Levi operates a resort shuttle from Kittilä airport. Driving is an option from Rovaniemi (about 2 hours north) or as part of a Lapland road trip.
