Aurora australis Gore tonight
Gore sits at 57°S magnetic latitude in Southland - Kp 3 is the threshold for aurora australis. At this latitude, moderate geomagnetic activity produces displays that would be invisible from Christchurch or even Dunedin. Dolamore Park (15 km southwest) gives Bortle Class 2–3 sky in the Hokonui Hills. The Southland Plains north of town give open flat-horizon positions. Face south. Peak season: May to August.

What Kp is needed here?
Gore sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 57°S. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 3 before the auroral oval expands far enough north to be visible from here.
At Kp 3, visibility is possible from Gore but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.
Best dark sky sites near Gore
Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark southern horizon within reach.
Dolamore Park
Get directions ↗A scenic reserve in the Hokonui Hills southwest of Gore, known for mature podocarp forest and native birds. At night the park is dark and quiet. The elevated terrain above the Mataura River valley gives a wider southern horizon than the valley floor. The park is open all hours and has a car park accessible by sealed road. Bortle Class 2-3 conditions from the ridgeline above the trees. Gore's light dome is to the northeast, leaving the south and southwest sky largely unaffected. At Kp 3, aurora australis appears above the southern skyline from the elevated positions within the reserve. Dolamore is within reach of Invercargill, Gore, and Dunedin as a dark sky base.
Hokonui Hills ridgeline
Get directions ↗The Hokonui Hills west of Gore rise to 500-600 m above the Southland Plains. The ridgeline gives an elevated open sky with 360° views above the valley haze. At night the hills are dark - no settlement on the ridgeline and minimal glow from Gore to the northeast and Invercargill to the west. The southern horizon from the hills extends across the Southland Plains toward Foveaux Strait. At Kp 3, aurora australis appears on the southern horizon, above the flat farmland silhouette. Access is via Dolamore Park Road and unsealed hill tracks. Standard vehicle on the main hill road; 4WD advised for summit tracks.
Mataura River flats, Mandeville
Get directions ↗The flat Mataura River farming country north of Gore gives an open southern horizon with Bortle Class 2-3 conditions. Pull off on rural roads near Mandeville or Riversdale for positions with minimal obstructions in any direction. The flat Southland Plains here give a lower horizon than the Hokonui Hills positions, but less driving distance from Gore. At Kp 3, aurora australis appears above the flat southern skyline. The main limitation is wind and frost on open country nights - dress accordingly. The Mandeville airfield area north of Gore has an especially open sky in all directions.
Best time to see the aurora australis in Gore
Gore's aurora australis season runs from April through August, centred on the southern winter when nights are longest and darkest. The equinox months of March and September bring a boost in geomagnetic activity. Summer months bring too much twilight for aurora to show at this latitude.
Activity peaks around the March and September equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. These windows produce the strongest aurora australis events of the year for observers at this latitude.
October through February brings persistent twilight that washes out the aurora australis. Strong events during these months remain invisible because the sky never gets dark enough.

How long to stay
For your best chance in March, plan at least 3 nights.
Aurora activity peaks at the March and September equinoxes in both hemispheres. This is driven by the angle of Earth's magnetic field relative to the solar wind, not by local seasons. Winter months at this latitude offer longer dark nights for observing, but March and September average the highest number of aurora nights in the historical data.
