Northern lights Biei tonight
Biei sits at 44° magnetic latitude in central Hokkaido, on a plateau of rolling farmland and isolated trees. The Kp threshold is 6. Aurora over the patchwork fields and lone trees creates a photography setting specific to this area of Japan. Shirogane Onsen, 15 km east, gives Bortle Class 2-3 sky. Aurora is not a nightly occurrence at this latitude - set up a push notification to catch events as they develop. Best season: October to March.

What Kp is needed here?
Biei sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 44°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 6 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.
At Kp 6, visibility is possible from Biei but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.
Best dark sky sites near Biei
Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.
Biei plateau farmland
Get directions ↗The patchwork farmland north of Biei town sits on a plateau at 200-400 m elevation where the rolling hills reduce light scatter from the town below. The famous lone trees of the area - used in Japanese commercial photography for decades - provide foreground elements that make the aurora photography setting here distinct from anywhere else in Hokkaido. Bortle Class 3-4. The Asahikawa city glow is visible to the northwest at 30 km, but from the plateau ridgelines facing north and east the sky is workably dark. At Kp 6, a aurora arc appears above the patchwork field horizon.
Shirogane Onsen surrounds
Get directions ↗Shirogane Onsen is a small hot spring village at the base of the Daisetsuzan range east of Biei. The surrounding forest and hills reduce urban light scatter effectively - Bortle Class 2-3 from positions on the approach road above the village. The Biei River valley to the north gives a dark corridor facing toward the open sky. The Blue Pond (Aoiike), 2 km from the onsen, is lit at night for tourism in peak season but the lighting is switched off in the shoulder periods; even when lit, positions 500 m further along the forest road are genuinely dark. A practical dark sky access point for those based in Biei or Shirogane.
Tokachi Hills north slope
Get directions ↗The north-facing slopes of the Tokachi Hills give a clear horizon toward the open Hokkaido plain in the direction of the coast. Bortle Class 3. The farm roads here are maintained in winter for agricultural access but may be icy at night. The elevation of 300-450 m places the viewing position above any low-lying ground fog that can form in valley bottoms on cold clear nights. Faces north toward Wakkanai at distance - on active Kp 6+ nights aurora appears overhead and in the north from these positions. Best approached from the main road with 4WD or appropriate tyres.
Best time to see the northern lights in Biei
At 44°N magnetic latitude, Biei sits at the lower end of regular aurora territory. Only the deep mid-winter months of November through January offer nights dark enough for aurora to be visible, and only then when a significant geomagnetic storm pushes the auroral oval this far south.
Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Biei's latitude.
Outside November through January, twilight is too bright for aurora viewing even during significant storms. The season is short, but the equinox months on either side of winter can extend it slightly when storm timing aligns.
