Northern lights Riga tonight

Riga sits at ~58°N magnetic latitude and needs Kp 4-5 for aurora. Cape Kolka at the tip of the Courland Peninsula is Latvia's best dark sky position - 180 km north-west with Bortle 2 sky facing the open Baltic. Gauja National Park is 60 km away for quicker access. Aurora is visible during G1-G2 storms on clear nights. Best season: September to April.

Threshold for Riga: Kp 4–5 Magnetic latitude: ~58°N Updated: 11 May, 19:59 UTC

What Kp is needed here?

Riga sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 58°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 4–5 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.

At Kp 4–5, visibility is possible from Riga but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near Riga

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.

Cape Kolka (Kolkasrags)

The northern tip of the Courland Peninsula, 180 km north-west of Riga along the P128 coast road. Cape Kolka faces north-west over the Baltic Sea at the point where the Gulf of Riga meets the open Baltic. Slītere National Park surrounds the cape with Bortle 2 sky - one of the darkest accessible positions in Latvia. The Kolka lighthouse area gives an elevated north-west-facing position. This is Latvia's best aurora viewing spot: the combination of northernmost latitude (57.7°N geographic), open ocean horizon, and deep darkness is the equivalent of a Scottish headland. The 2-hour drive from Riga is the trade-off.

Gauja National Park (Vidzeme)

Latvia's largest national park, 60 km north-east of Riga via the A2 highway to Sigulda. The open areas above the Gauja river valley give north-facing sky with Bortle 3-4 conditions. The park town of Sigulda is 50 km from Riga - accessible in under an hour. Less dark than Cape Kolka but practical for a quick response when a storm develops unexpectedly on a clear evening. The hill ridges above the valley give unobstructed northern horizons.

Jūrmala coast (Gulf of Riga)

The resort town of Jūrmala, 30 km west of Riga along the A10 motorway, faces north over the Gulf of Riga. The pine forest beach gives modest darkness (Bortle 4-5) and a north-facing open water horizon. The quickest dark-sky option from central Riga - 30 minutes by car or train. At Kp 5+ aurora may appear on the northern horizon across the gulf despite the moderate light pollution. Best suited as a fallback when a stronger storm develops unexpectedly and driving further is not possible.

Common questions

Northern lights from Riga - Cape Kolka, storm thresholds, and aurora in Latvia.

Can you see the northern lights from Riga?
Yes, during moderate geomagnetic storms. Riga at ~58°N magnetic latitude needs Kp 4-5. This is G1-G2 activity, which occurs multiple times per year during solar maximum. Aurora is visible from the Gulf of Riga coast at Jūrmala at Kp 5; from Cape Kolka, Kp 4 is sufficient. At Kp 6+, aurora has been seen from Riga's suburbs facing north over the Daugava estuary.
What Kp is needed for aurora near Riga?
Kp 4 from Cape Kolka (180 km north-west) and Gauja National Park (60 km north-east). Kp 5 for aurora visible from the Jūrmala coast (30 km west). Kp 6 for aurora visible from central Riga through the city's light pollution. Riga at 58°N magnetic latitude gives better aurora access than cities in Germany or the Netherlands, but needs stronger activity than Tallinn at 60°N.
What is the best dark sky site near Riga for aurora?
Cape Kolka at 180 km is the best position - Bortle 2, north-west-facing open sea, and latitude 57.7°N. The 2-hour drive is worthwhile for a planned aurora chase on a verified G2+ storm forecast. For a quicker response, Gauja National Park at 60 km gives Bortle 3-4 and is accessible in under an hour. Jūrmala at 30 km is the fallback for an unexpected storm when driving further is not practical.
How does Riga compare to Tallinn for aurora?
Tallinn has the lower threshold. At 60°N magnetic latitude versus Riga's 58°N, Tallinn needs Kp 3-4 against Riga's Kp 4-5. Tallinn also has Lahemaa National Park - a large Bortle 2-3 area 70 km from the city. Riga's equivalent at Cape Kolka is 180 km away. For regular aurora watching in the Baltic states, Tallinn is the more practical base. Riga is a good option for visitors already there who respond to an active storm forecast.
When is aurora season in Riga?
September to April. Riga at 56.9°N geographic has around 16 hours of darkness in December. The equinox months of September and March are the most geomagnetically active of the year. Clear skies are more common in February and March when stable high-pressure systems dominate the Baltic.
