Aurora australis Victoria tonight
Victoria's southern coast sits at 50°S magnetic latitude. Kp 6 is the threshold from Wilsons Promontory - mainland Australia's southernmost point - and the Great Ocean Road. Both face south over the Southern Ocean with minimal light pollution. The Alpine region adds elevation above coastal cloud. Peak season: May to August.

What Kp is needed here?
Victoria sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 50°S. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 6 before the auroral oval expands far enough north to be visible from here.
At Kp 6, visibility is possible from Victoria but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.
Best dark sky sites near Victoria
Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark southern horizon within reach.
Cape Otway Lighthouse and Great Ocean Road
Get directions ↗South-facing Southern Ocean coast at the tip of the Otway peninsula. Cape Otway Lighthouse - the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia - stands at the peninsula tip, surrounded by Otway National Park, which gives dark sky in all directions. The cliffs face directly south over open ocean. Strong Kp 5-6 events have produced aurora photographs along this stretch of coast.
Wilsons Promontory National Park
Get directions ↗The southernmost point of mainland Australia. The park faces south over Bass Strait toward Tasmania with no permanent light sources within its boundaries at night. South Point beaches give a directly south-facing position with an unobstructed ocean horizon. Kp 6 can produce visible aurora with Bass Strait as foreground. One of the most photographed aurora locations in Victoria. Camping permits required.
Mount Buffalo National Park (Alpine region)
Get directions ↗The Buffalo Plateau at 1400-1700 m elevation sits above the valley cloud that frequently blankets the Alpine region in winter. The open plateau faces south with Bright and Porepunkah far below in the valley. Elevation gives clear sky when the coast is overcast. Aurora has been photographed from the plateau during Kp 6+ events.
Best time to see the aurora australis in Victoria
At 50°S magnetic latitude, Victoria sits at the outer edge of regular aurora australis territory. Only the southern winter months, May through July, occasionally bring storms powerful enough to push the oval this far north. Outside this window, there is insufficient darkness for aurora to be visible.
Activity peaks around the March and September equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. These windows produce the strongest aurora australis events of the year for observers at this latitude.
Outside May through July, twilight prevents aurora visibility even during significant geomagnetic storms. The season is short, but equinox months on either side of winter can extend it when timing is favourable.
