Northern lights Cape Kolka tonight

Cape Kolka sits at 58°N magnetic latitude, where the Gulf of Riga meets the open Baltic. Kp 4 is the threshold from this north-facing coast. Part of Slītere National Park, the cape has Bortle Class 2 sky with no development in any direction. Latvia's best aurora position, 180 km from Riga. Best season: September to April.

What Kp is needed here?

Cape Kolka sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 58°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 4 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.

At Kp 4, visibility is possible from Cape Kolka but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near Cape Kolka

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.

Cape Kolka point

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky 180 km from Riga - approximately 2 hours 30 minute drive

The northernmost tip of the Courland Peninsula where the Gulf of Riga meets the open Baltic. The cape is completely undeveloped - no buildings within several kilometres. The coast faces north over the open Baltic Sea with no land obstruction between the cape and the Scandinavian coast. One of the darkest positions accessible by road anywhere in the Baltic states.

Kolka village beach

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2-3 - Excellent dark sky 182 km from Riga - approximately 2 hours 35 minute drive

The beach north of Kolka village gives a north-facing flat horizon over the Baltic. The village has minimal lighting - a small fishing settlement with traditional wooden buildings. The beach is accessible on foot from the village car park and gives a clean aurora horizon. Slightly less isolated than the cape tip itself but more practical for extended watching sessions.

Slītere lighthouse

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky 175 km from Riga - approximately 2 hours 20 minute drive

An elevated position on the ancient sea cliff above the Slītere National Park coast. The lighthouse itself is a historic structure and gives a dark forest surround with views over the Baltic. The elevated position - around 30 m above the coastline - gives a cleaner northern horizon than beach-level positions and avoids sea fog that can settle low on the coast.

Best time to see the northern lights in Cape Kolka

Cape Kolka's aurora season runs from late September through to March, when nights are long enough for truly dark skies. The equinox months, September and March, bring a natural boost in geomagnetic activity, making them statistically the best of the season. Summer months bring too much twilight for aurora to be visible at this latitude.

Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Cape Kolka's latitude.

April through August brings persistent astronomical twilight that washes out aurora completely. Even strong events (Kp 6+) remain invisible during this period because the sky never gets dark enough.

Common questions

Northern lights from Cape Kolka - Slītere National Park, Kp thresholds, and aurora in Latvia.

Is Cape Kolka the best place in Latvia for aurora?
Yes. The cape sits at the junction of the Gulf of Riga and the open Baltic at 57.7°N geographic, with a Kp 4 threshold - the lowest of any accessible position in Latvia. Slītere National Park gives Bortle Class 2 conditions. The combination of high latitude, north-facing open sea, and zero development makes it Latvia's premier aurora position. The 180 km drive from Riga is the commitment required.
What Kp is needed for aurora at Cape Kolka?
Kp 4 from the cape point. The Kp index is a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours. At 58°N magnetic latitude, Cape Kolka sits at a threshold between Estonia (Kp 3-4) and the Netherlands (Kp 6). During G1 storms (Kp 5), an active aurora band or arc is typically visible. At Kp 4, faint green glow on the northern horizon is detectable from the darkest positions.
How far is Cape Kolka from Riga?
Around 180 km, approximately 2 hours 30 minutes by car via the A10 motorway west, then north on the P131 through the Courland Peninsula. There is no direct public transport to the cape. The nearest town with accommodation is Dundaga, 30 km south. Kolka village itself has basic facilities. The drive through the Courland pine forest is dark for the final 40 km - an advantage for avoiding light exposure before arrival.
What is Slītere National Park?
Slītere is a protected nature area covering the northern tip of the Courland Peninsula - the landform that encloses the Gulf of Riga on its western side. The park protects ancient coastal bluffs, boreal forest, and coastal wetlands. Its strict protection means no new development and no light sources within the park. This makes the Slītere coast - including Cape Kolka - consistently dark year-round. The park covers around 16,000 hectares, roughly the size of central London.
When is the best time for aurora at Cape Kolka?
September to April. Latvia has adequate dark nights across these months. February and March often produce the clearest skies on the Latvian coast - cold continental high pressure arriving from the east gives clear, stable nights. The cape is exposed and can be windy; dress for Baltic coastal conditions. Monitor NOAA space weather alerts for Kp 4+ and the LVĢMC (Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre) cloud forecasts.
