Northern lights Andenes tonight
Andenes sits at ~69°N magnetic latitude at the northern tip of Andøya in the Vesterålen archipelago. Kp 1–2 is the threshold. The lighthouse headland gives an open Polar Sea horizon facing north. Bleik beach, 8 km south, gives Bortle Class 1-2 conditions and a distinctive white-sand and sea-stack foreground. Andøya Space Centre operates nearby. Best season: October to April, including polar night from late November.

What Kp is needed here?
Andenes sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 69°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 1–2 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.
At Kp 1–2, visibility is possible from Andenes but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.
Best dark sky sites near Andenes
Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.
Andenes lighthouse and north headland
Get directions ↗The Andenes lighthouse sits at the northern tip of Andøya, one of the northernmost points in the Vesterålen archipelago. From the headland, the horizon is open to the north and northeast over the Polar Sea. Bortle Class 2. The lighthouse is operational and has some working light, but the positions on the rock platform to the northwest are away from direct glare. At Kp 1-2, aurora arcs appear above the dark northern horizon from the headland. The lighthouse red-and-white striped tower provides a foreground element for photography. In winter the rocks can be icy - appropriate footwear is needed.
Bleik beach
Get directions ↗Bleik is a small village with one of the most distinctive beaches in Norway - a broad arc of white sand facing west over the open Norwegian Sea, backed by the Bleiksøya bird stack visible offshore. Bortle Class 1-2 from the beach. The western horizon is unobstructed and the beach faces the direction from which Atlantic weather approaches, meaning it can be exposed in unsettled conditions. On clear nights it is one of the darkest accessible positions on Andøya. The village has minimal lighting and the beach itself is unlit. A practical dark sky position for those based in Andenes - a short drive that gives significantly better sky than the town.
Nøss headland
Get directions ↗The Nøss headland is a coastal position northwest of Andenes with open sea views to the north and west. Bortle Class 2. The headland is accessible via a coast path from the lighthouse area and gives a position away from any lighthouse glare. The northern horizon faces directly over the Polar Sea. At Kp 1-2, aurora appears above the open water to the north. The walk along the coast path requires a headtorch and care in wet or icy conditions. A useful alternative for those who want distance from the lighthouse lights while staying within walking range of Andenes.
Best time to see the northern lights in Andenes
At 69°N magnetic latitude, Andenes has one of the longest aurora seasons in the world. Meaningful darkness returns in late August and displays are possible on almost any clear night from September through March. Only the endless daylight of May, June, and July rules out viewing completely.
Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Andenes's latitude.
May through July is effectively impossible for aurora viewing: the midnight sun keeps the sky bright around the clock at this latitude. No storm level, not even G5, can produce a visible display without astronomical darkness.
