What Kp is needed here?

Jūrmala sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 57°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 4 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.

At Kp 4, visibility is possible from Jūrmala but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near Jūrmala

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.

Jūrmala north beach - Majori to Dubulti

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 3 - Rural sky Walking distance from Majori station - approximately 10 minute walk

Jūrmala's beach stretches 26 km along the Gulf of Riga coast facing north, and the widest section between Majori and Dubulti provides around 200 m of open sand between the dune ridge and the waterline. In winter the resort hotels are closed and the beach is quiet, giving an undisturbed view across the Gulf of Riga toward Estonia. Riga's light dome sits 20 km to the east and affects the eastern sky, but the north-facing horizon across the gulf is free of artificial light. The beach is accessible on foot from Majori railway station year-round, and the water's edge gives Bortle Class 3.

Ķemeri National Park - Great Ķemeri Bog

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 3 - Rural sky 20 km from Jūrmala beach - approximately 25 minute drive

Ķemeri National Park protects one of Latvia's largest raised bogs, 20 km southeast of Jūrmala. The Great Ķemeri Bog has a 3.4 km circular boardwalk accessible year-round from the car park on Meža iela, and the bog surface is open and flat with sightlines to the horizon in all directions. The surrounding forest absorbs light from both Jūrmala and Riga, and the boardwalk is elevated above the surrounding sedge and bog myrtle, giving a clear sky view. From the bog platform the conditions reach Bortle Class 3.

Ragakāpa nature park dune ridge

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 3 - Rural sky 3 km from Majori - approximately 8 minute drive

Ragakāpa is a protected coastal dune ridge rising to 17 m behind the beach, accessible from a signed car park on Meža prospekts. The dune crest gives an elevated position above the beach with views north and northwest across the Gulf of Riga, and a boardwalk path runs along the crest. The ridge is forested with Scots pine which blocks some lateral sky, but the crest path gives an open overhead view and a clear northern horizon over the beach below. The elevation modestly reduces any town glow from below, and conditions from the dune ridge reach Bortle Class 3.

When to go

Best time to see the northern lights in Jūrmala

Jūrmala's aurora season runs from late September through to March, when nights are long enough for truly dark skies. The equinox months, September and March, bring a natural boost in geomagnetic activity, making them statistically the best of the season. Summer months bring too much twilight for aurora to be visible at this latitude.

Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Jūrmala's latitude.

April through August brings persistent astronomical twilight that washes out aurora completely. Even strong events (Kp 6+) remain invisible during this period because the sky never gets dark enough.

Questions

Common questions about aurora in Jūrmala

What Kp is needed for aurora in Jūrmala?
The Kp index is a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours. Jūrmala at 57°N magnetic latitude needs Kp 4 from the beach positions on the Gulf of Riga. This is the same threshold as Aberdeen in Scotland and comparable to southern Finland's west coast. G1 storm conditions (Kp 5) give reliable visible aurora from the beach; Kp 4 events can produce a faint arc detectable from the waterline on clear nights with good dark adaptation.
How accessible is Jūrmala from Riga for aurora?
Jūrmala is 20 minutes from Riga by train on the Riga-Tukums electrified line, with trains running approximately every 30 minutes throughout the evening. Majori is the central resort station; from there the beach is a 10-minute walk north through the dune gap. No car is required for the beach position. For Ķemeri National Park, a car is necessary as public transport to the park entrance is limited. The train frequency makes Jūrmala a practical same-evening option from Riga when aurora activity develops.
Is Jūrmala or Cape Kolka better for aurora?
Cape Kolka is significantly better. The cape sits at 57.7°N geographic at the junction of the Gulf of Riga and the open Baltic, with Bortle Class 2 sky in Slītere National Park - substantially darker than Jūrmala's Class 3. The 180 km drive from Riga takes around 2 hours. Jūrmala's advantage is accessibility: 20 minutes by train from Riga. For a spontaneous same-night watch when the forecast looks active, Jūrmala is practical; for a dedicated aurora trip, Cape Kolka gives better dark sky.
When is Jūrmala best for aurora?
September to April. The summer resort season (June to August) has too little darkness at 57°N. The winter months have long nights but the Baltic maritime climate brings frequent cloud. The best combination occurs in February and March, when cold continental high-pressure systems clear the sky for days at a time and geomagnetic activity is near its equinoctial peak. October also gives good odds in the equinox window. Monitor the Latvian meteorological service (LVĢMC) cloud forecast alongside the aurora alert.
What aurora photography opportunities does Jūrmala offer?
Jūrmala's 26 km beach gives a flat water foreground for aurora photographs that few European resort coasts can match at this magnetic latitude. The dune silhouette to the south provides a dark background that prevents lens flare when shooting north. On calm Gulf of Riga nights, the reflection band below the horizon extends the apparent display area. In winter the beach is largely empty of people, making it possible to compose aurora shots without crowds or torches affecting long exposures.
