Northern lights Jūrmala tonight
Jūrmala stretches 26 km along the Gulf of Riga at 57°N magnetic latitude, 20 minutes by train from Riga. In winter the resort is quiet and the north-facing beach gives a dark sea horizon that faces directly north toward Estonia. Kp 4 is the threshold for aurora from the beach at Majori. Ķemeri National Park, Latvia's largest raised bog, is 25 minutes by car and reaches Bortle Class 3. Best season: September to April.

What Kp is needed here?
Jūrmala sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 57°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 4 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.
At Kp 4, visibility is possible from Jūrmala but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.
Best dark sky sites near Jūrmala
Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.
Jūrmala north beach - Majori to Dubulti
Get directions ↗Jūrmala's beach stretches 26 km along the Gulf of Riga coast facing north, and the widest section between Majori and Dubulti provides around 200 m of open sand between the dune ridge and the waterline. In winter the resort hotels are closed and the beach is quiet, giving an undisturbed view across the Gulf of Riga toward Estonia. Riga's light dome sits 20 km to the east and affects the eastern sky, but the north-facing horizon across the gulf is free of artificial light. The beach is accessible on foot from Majori railway station year-round, and the water's edge gives Bortle Class 3.
Ķemeri National Park - Great Ķemeri Bog
Get directions ↗Ķemeri National Park protects one of Latvia's largest raised bogs, 20 km southeast of Jūrmala. The Great Ķemeri Bog has a 3.4 km circular boardwalk accessible year-round from the car park on Meža iela, and the bog surface is open and flat with sightlines to the horizon in all directions. The surrounding forest absorbs light from both Jūrmala and Riga, and the boardwalk is elevated above the surrounding sedge and bog myrtle, giving a clear sky view. From the bog platform the conditions reach Bortle Class 3.
Ragakāpa nature park dune ridge
Get directions ↗Ragakāpa is a protected coastal dune ridge rising to 17 m behind the beach, accessible from a signed car park on Meža prospekts. The dune crest gives an elevated position above the beach with views north and northwest across the Gulf of Riga, and a boardwalk path runs along the crest. The ridge is forested with Scots pine which blocks some lateral sky, but the crest path gives an open overhead view and a clear northern horizon over the beach below. The elevation modestly reduces any town glow from below, and conditions from the dune ridge reach Bortle Class 3.
Best time to see the northern lights in Jūrmala
Jūrmala's aurora season runs from late September through to March, when nights are long enough for truly dark skies. The equinox months, September and March, bring a natural boost in geomagnetic activity, making them statistically the best of the season. Summer months bring too much twilight for aurora to be visible at this latitude.
Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Jūrmala's latitude.
April through August brings persistent astronomical twilight that washes out aurora completely. Even strong events (Kp 6+) remain invisible during this period because the sky never gets dark enough.
