Northern lights Klaipėda tonight
Klaipėda sits at 55°N magnetic latitude on the Baltic Sea — Lithuania's only coastal city and the gateway to the Curonian Spit. Kp 5 is the threshold from the north-facing Baltic coast. The UNESCO-listed Curonian Spit stretches 97 km south, offering elevated dune positions with open sea horizons and exceptional dark sky. The G5 storm of May 2024 was visible from this coast. Best season: September to March.

What Kp is needed here?
Klaipėda sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 55°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 5 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.
At Kp 5, visibility is possible from Klaipėda but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.
Best dark sky sites near Klaipėda
Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.
Curonian Spit — Nida dunes
Get directions ↗Nida is the main settlement at the southern end of the Lithuanian section of the Curonian Spit. In winter the village is largely deserted and the surrounding dunes are completely dark. The dune crests above the village reach 50–60 m and give elevated positions with views north and west over the open Baltic Sea. Walking 15 minutes from the village car park brings observers to the main Parnidis dune, from which the Baltic horizon extends unobstructed for 70 km. One of the finest natural aurora observation platforms in the southern Baltic region.
Curonian Spit — north section, Juodkrantė
Get directions ↗The northern third of the Lithuanian Curonian Spit between the ferry terminal and Nida. The forest road along the western shore gives direct access to Baltic beach positions facing north. The beach here is wide and flat with no settlements north of Juodkrantė village. Open Baltic sea to the north-west covers the full quadrant relevant for observing aurora arcs and bands above the northern horizon. The ferry from the Klaipėda old town terminal runs year-round.
Palanga beach, north section
Get directions ↗The Baltic resort town of Palanga sits 25 km north of Klaipėda. The beach faces west over open sea and the northern section above the town becomes progressively darker as it approaches the Latvian border. In winter Palanga is largely empty - the resort infrastructure is closed and the beach is dark for its entire length. The flat sandy beach gives an unobstructed western horizon where aurora bands and pillars are often visible to the north-west before they become fully overhead. More accessible than the Curonian Spit but with higher ambient light from the town itself.
Best time to see the northern lights in Klaipėda
At 55°N magnetic latitude, Klaipėda sits at the lower end of regular aurora territory. Only the deep mid-winter months of November through January offer nights dark enough for aurora to be visible, and only then when a significant geomagnetic storm pushes the auroral oval this far south.
Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Klaipėda's latitude.
Outside November through January, twilight is too bright for aurora viewing even during significant storms. The season is short, but the equinox months on either side of winter can extend it slightly when storm timing aligns.
