Northern lights Šumava tonight

Šumava — the Bohemian Forest — is the Czech Republic's largest national park on the German and Austrian borders. The elevated plateau at 1,000–1,300 m has Bortle Class 2 sky, among the darkest in central Europe. Kp 6–7 is needed at 50°N magnetic latitude. During the G5 storm of May 2024, aurora was photographed from Šumava's hilltops. Best season: September to March.

What Kp is needed here?

Šumava National Park sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 50°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 6–7 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.

At Kp 6–7, visibility is possible from Šumava National Park but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near Šumava National Park

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.

Boubín primeval forest and plateau

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky 120 km from Plzeň - approximately 90 minute drive

The Boubín nature reserve protects a remnant of primeval temperate rainforest at 1,100 m on the Šumava plateau. The surrounding open moorland and forest gaps give some of the darkest sky in the Czech Republic - measured at Bortle Class 2 by local astronomers. The road from Vimperk reaches the reserve's car park within a few hundred metres of open hilltop positions. No light sources exist for 30 km in the northern direction toward Germany.

Lake Lipno shore

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 3 - Rural sky 40 km from Český Krumlov - approximately 35 minute drive

The largest Czech reservoir stretches 44 km along the Vltava River near the Austrian border. The northern shore near Frymburk gives a flat open horizon north across the water. The surrounding hills and forest block any urban glow from the south. In winter the reservoir is quiet, with resort villages largely empty and minimal artificial lighting. A practical and accessible position for aurora watching when Šumava's high plateau is obscured by cloud.

Kvilda and the high Šumava plateau

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky 35 km from Vimperk - approximately 35 minute drive

Kvilda is the highest permanently inhabited village in the Czech Republic at 1,065 m. The open moorland around the village gives wide all-sky access. The plateau here is largely deforested due to bark beetle damage and subsequent wind-throw, which has the secondary effect of giving unobstructed sky access that forested Šumava does not otherwise provide. One of the coldest inhabited places in the Czech Republic in winter - temperatures of -20°C are normal - but clear nights are proportionally more frequent than the warmer, cloudier valleys.

Best time to see the northern lights in Šumava National Park

At 50°N magnetic latitude, Šumava National Park sits at the lower end of regular aurora territory. Only the deep mid-winter months of November through January offer nights dark enough for aurora to be visible, and only then when a significant geomagnetic storm pushes the auroral oval this far south.

Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Šumava National Park's latitude.

Outside November through January, twilight is too bright for aurora viewing even during significant storms. The season is short, but the equinox months on either side of winter can extend it slightly when storm timing aligns.

Common questions

Aurora watching from Šumava — Bohemian Forest, Boubín, and Kvilda plateau.

Can you see the northern lights from Šumava?
During strong geomagnetic storms, yes. Šumava at 50°N magnetic latitude needs Kp 6–7 - equivalent to G2–G3 geomagnetic activity. This threshold is reached roughly 10–15 times per year during the current solar maximum. The Bohemian Forest plateau at 1,000–1,300 m elevation gives Bortle Class 2 sky that allows even low-altitude aurora to be photographed. The G5 storm of May 2024 was clearly visible from several Šumava hilltops.
What Kp is needed for aurora at Šumava?
Kp 6–7 from the high plateau positions around Boubín and Kvilda. The Kp index is a global measure of geomagnetic activity from 0 to 9. At Kp 6 the auroral oval expands to approximately 50°N magnetic latitude. The altitude advantage at Šumava (1,000–1,300 m) reduces atmospheric absorption and improves contrast compared with low-lying positions at the same latitude. Kp 7 produces reliable visible displays above the northern horizon from open plateau positions.
How dark is Šumava compared to other Czech destinations?
Šumava is the darkest accessible area in the Czech Republic. The high plateau between Vimperk and the Austrian border measures Bortle Class 2 - comparable to remote Scottish glens or the darkest parts of Scandinavia's populated regions. The lack of large settlements within 40 km to the north means no significant light dome on the critical northern horizon. The Kvilda plateau in particular is mentioned by Czech amateur astronomers as a reference dark site for the country.
How do I get to Šumava from Prague?
About 2.5–3 hours by car south-west on the D4 and D5 motorways toward Plzeň, then south on Route 27 toward Vimperk. The high plateau is accessible year-round via Route 169. Kvilda and the Boubín area are both on this road. Public transport is limited in the park - regional buses serve the valley towns but not the plateau roads. A hire car from Prague is the practical option. Alternative access from Munich is about 2 hours north-east via Passau.
When are the best conditions for aurora at Šumava?
September to March, with the equinox months of September and March the most geomagnetically active. Šumava's plateau has a distinctive weather pattern: cloud cover is significant through much of winter, but high-pressure spells bring crystal-clear cold nights. The elevated plateau clears before the valleys when a front passes through. Temperatures on the Kvilda plateau reach -15 to -25°C in January - full winter kit is necessary. Spring and autumn give milder cold with comparable aurora probability.
