Northern lights Nemuro tonight

Nemuro sits at 43° magnetic latitude at the eastern extremity of Hokkaido. Cape Nosappu - Japan's easternmost public point - gives a clear view over the Nemuro Strait and the Sea of Okhotsk. The Kp threshold is 6-7. On an active night Nemuro is among the first positions in Japan to register aurora. Combine with Kushiro (100 km west) for the wider eastern Hokkaido circuit. Set a push notification before you head out to the cape. Best season: October to March.

What Kp is needed here?

Nemuro sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 43°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 6–7 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.

At Kp 6–7, visibility is possible from Nemuro but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near Nemuro

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.

Cape Nosappu (Nosappu Misaki)

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2-3 - Excellent dark sky 25 km east of Nemuro city - approximately 30 minute drive on Route 35

Cape Nosappu is the easternmost point of Hokkaido and the easternmost publicly accessible point on the Japanese mainland. The cape faces east across the Nemuro Strait toward the Habomai Islands. It is the first point in Japan to see the sun rise on any given day - and on nights with aurora activity, it is among the first positions in Japan to register it. Bortle Class 2-3 from the cape itself; the lighthouse and the small observation monument have some working lights but the headland positions to the south give a clean sky. In winter the cape is exposed and cold with frequent northeast winds off the Sea of Okhotsk.

Nemuro Peninsula coastal road

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 3 - Rural sky Along Route 35 east of Nemuro - accessible from any point on the 25 km stretch

The coastal road between Nemuro city and Cape Nosappu runs along the southern shore of the peninsula facing the Nemuro Strait. Multiple pull-offs along the 25 km give north and east-facing positions over the water. Bortle Class 3 from the road corridor. The Sea of Okhotsk coast gives clear winter nights under Siberian high pressure, with less coastal fog than the Pacific side of Hokkaido. Positions midway along the peninsula road reduce both the city glow from Nemuro to the west and the lighthouse light from the cape to the east. Useful for spontaneous stops without committing to the full drive to the cape.

Kiritappu wetland

Get directions ↗
Bortle Class 2 - Excellent dark sky 35 km west of Nemuro - approximately 40 minute drive

Kiritappu is a coastal wetland west of Nemuro where the Kushiro Shitsugen National Park approaches the coast. The flat bog terrain gives a 360° open sky with minimal horizon obstruction. Bortle Class 2. The wetland road is accessible in winter and the terrain is open enough for wide-angle photography of aurora overhead with the flat wetland below. Combined with a Nemuro base, Kiritappu extends the range of dark sky positions westward toward Kushiro. The wetland is protected conservation land - stay on the road and do not enter the bog itself at night.

Best time to see the northern lights in Nemuro

At 43°N magnetic latitude, Nemuro sits at the lower end of regular aurora territory. Only the deep mid-winter months of November through January offer nights dark enough for aurora to be visible, and only then when a significant geomagnetic storm pushes the auroral oval this far south.

Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Nemuro's latitude.

Outside November through January, twilight is too bright for aurora viewing even during significant storms. The season is short, but the equinox months on either side of winter can extend it slightly when storm timing aligns.

Common questions

Aurora at Nemuro - Cape Nosappu, eastern Hokkaido circuit, and the Kp 6-7 threshold.

Why is Nemuro significant for aurora in Japan?
Cape Nosappu at the eastern tip of Nemuro Peninsula is the easternmost publicly accessible point in Japan. On nights with geomagnetic activity, it is one of the first positions in the country to register aurora. The practical advantage is the open eastern and northern horizon - the Sea of Okhotsk and the Nemuro Strait give an unobstructed view in the most important direction. Nemuro at 43° magnetic latitude needs Kp 6-7, which is the same threshold as Kushiro to the west. The eastern position does not lower the threshold, but the coast-facing orientation and Bortle Class 2-3 sky from the cape give better conditions than comparable inland positions at the same latitude.
What Kp is needed for aurora at Nemuro?
Kp 6-7 from dark coastal positions including Cape Nosappu. The Kp index measures global geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours. At 43° magnetic latitude, Kp 6 is enough for a visible display from a dark site facing north or east. Kp 6 events occur roughly 10-15 times per year; Kp 7 events around 5-10 times. The solar maximum of 2025-2026 has made both more frequent. Aurora at Nemuro is an exceptional event on a Hokkaido trip - plan for it as a bonus rather than the primary reason to visit.
How does Nemuro relate to Kushiro as an eastern Hokkaido aurora base?
Kushiro (100 km west) is the larger city with more accommodation options and direct rail and air access from Sapporo and Tokyo. Nemuro has the eastern position advantage - Cape Nosappu extends 25 km further east and gives the open Nemuro Strait horizon. Both cities have the same Kp 6-7 threshold at similar magnetic latitudes. A practical itinerary uses Kushiro as the base for accommodation and access, with a day trip east to Nemuro and Cape Nosappu on a clear night with strong geomagnetic conditions forecast. The Kushiro Shitsugen wetlands and Nemuro's Kiritappu give back-to-back dark sky positions on the drive between the two cities.
How do I get to Nemuro?
Nemuro is the eastern terminus of the Nemuro Main Line from Kushiro (1 hour 30 minutes by express). Kushiro is accessible from Sapporo by the Super Ozora express train (3 hours 30 minutes) or by flight from Sapporo (40 minutes) or Tokyo (1 hour 30 minutes). There is no airport at Nemuro. By car from Kushiro, Nemuro is 100 km east on Route 44 (approximately 1 hour 20 minutes). A hire car is useful for reaching Cape Nosappu at night, as the city bus service does not run late. Cape Nosappu is 25 km from Nemuro city on Route 35.
How do I monitor aurora conditions from Nemuro?
Set up a push notification at /northern-lights-alert with a Kp 6 threshold. The notification is particularly useful at Nemuro because the drive to Cape Nosappu takes 30 minutes each way - you need advance notice to be in position as conditions develop. Strong geomagnetic events typically ramp up over 2-4 hours from initial onset, giving enough time to drive from Nemuro city to the cape after receiving an alert. Check the 7-day forecast on this page for storm outlook, and monitor Kp in real time during any night with a Kp 5 reading on the 3-hour update - escalation to Kp 6 is common once a storm has begun.
