Threshold for Northumberland: Kp 5 Magnetic latitude: ~55°N Updated: 10 May, 11:07 UTC

What Kp is needed here?

Northumberland sits at a magnetic latitude of approximately 55°N. The Kp index - a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (quiet) to 9 (extreme storm), updated every 3 hours - needs to reach Kp 5 before the auroral oval expands far enough south to be visible from here.

At Kp 5, visibility is possible from Northumberland but skies need to be clear and dark. Cloud cover and light pollution remain the main obstacles even when Kp is high enough.

Best dark sky sites near Northumberland

Light pollution is the biggest obstacle after cloud cover. These sites give you the best dark northern horizon within reach.

Kielder Forest Dark Sky Park

England's largest designated Dark Sky Park and one of the most light-pollution-free areas in England. The Forestry Commission manages multiple dark sky viewpoints. Kielder Observatory hosts public events year-round and the forest offers Bortle 3 conditions across a huge area.

Kielder Observatory

A purpose-built public astronomy observatory within Kielder Forest. Hosts dedicated aurora watches, has a north-facing open-air viewing area, and trained staff. Event tickets sell out quickly on active forecast nights.

Northumberland National Park - Hadrian's Wall corridor

The rolling hills and moorland south of the park boundary near Haltwhistle and Bardon Mill give open northern views with very low light pollution. The Wall itself provides a dramatic foreground on a clear night.

Holy Island (Lindisfarne)

Tidal island off the Northumberland coast. Accessible via causeway (tide-dependent). The coast north of the castle gives an open North Sea horizon with virtually no light behind you. Dark and flat for an unobstructed northern arc.

Common questions

Kielder Forest, Northumberland National Park, and aurora watching in north-east England.

Is Kielder Forest the best place in England for aurora?
It is the best designated Dark Sky Park in England and arguably the best single aurora destination. The combination of low latitude (55°N magnetic), Bortle 3 skies across thousands of hectares, an active public observatory, and accessible viewpoints makes it the most capable aurora site south of Scotland.
What Kp is needed to see aurora at Kielder?
Kp 5 is the practical threshold from Kielder Forest, consistent with a magnetic latitude of around 55°N. At Kp 5 an arc is typically visible on the northern horizon. At Kp 6 the display becomes active and colourful. Kp 7+ produces overhead aurora visible across northern England.
How do I get to Kielder Forest?
Kielder is about 1 hour west of Newcastle via the A69 and then north on the B6320. The village of Kielder and the observatory are at the end of the road along the reservoir. There is no public transport in the evenings, so a car is essential. Check tide tables if combining with Holy Island on the coast.
Does Kielder Observatory run aurora events?
Yes. Kielder Observatory runs dedicated "aurora hunts" on nights when geomagnetic activity is forecast. They also have a real-time alert system and a Twitter/social media feed. Book in advance through their website as popular nights sell out fast. Private observatory hire is also available.
How far is Northumberland from Newcastle for an aurora trip?
Kielder Forest is about 60-70 km from Newcastle city centre - roughly 60-75 minutes by car. Hadrian's Wall viewpoints near Haltwhistle are about 50 minutes. Holy Island is around 70 minutes north-east. All are manageable as evening trips when activity is forecast.
