A herring town at one of Iceland's lowest aurora thresholds

Siglufjörður spent much of the 20th century as Iceland's herring capital, at times generating close to half the country's export income, before the industry collapsed almost overnight in 1969. What's left is a small, steep-sided fjord town of around 1,300 people, cut off from the rest of north Iceland by mountains until the Héðinsfjarðargöng tunnels opened in 2010. That isolation is exactly what keeps the sky here so dark - at roughly 66 degrees magnetic latitude, among the furthest north on mainland Iceland, Kp 2 is often enough.

When to go

The season runs September to April, with October through February giving the darkest skies. At this latitude the threshold is low year-round, so the main variable is simply getting a clear night - the surrounding mountains that block light pollution also generate their own local cloud and wind patterns worth checking before heading out.

Getting there and getting around

Fly into Keflavík (KEF) or connect on to Akureyri; you can compare flights to Reykjavik as your starting point. From Akureyri it's about 80 km to Siglufjörður, roughly 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 minutes via the Héðinsfjarðargöng tunnels through Ólafsfjörður. Where to watch

The harbour itself is dark enough for most nights and reachable on foot from anywhere in town. For a step further, the marked viewpoint at the mouth of the Héðinsfjarðargöng tunnel faces open sea, cliffs, and the distant Siglunesviti lighthouse. For the most committed option, the walk out to Siglunes point - reachable only on foot or by boat - opens onto the sea on three sides, about as unobstructed as this coastline gets.

What to expect, honestly

Siglufjörður's Kp 2 threshold is one of the easiest to clear anywhere covered on this site, and the town's isolation - once its biggest drawback, now its main asset for aurora watching - means genuine darkness is never far from your accommodation. The trade-off is that it's a detour: this isn't a stop on the way to somewhere else, so factor the drive from Akureyri into your itinerary rather than treating it as a quick add-on.
