When to go

Best time to see the northern lights in Iqaluit

At 72°N magnetic latitude, Iqaluit has one of the longest aurora seasons in the world. Meaningful darkness returns in late August and displays are possible on almost any clear night from September through March. Only the endless daylight of May, June, and July rules out viewing completely.

Activity peaks around the September and March equinoxes, when Earth's magnetic field geometry is most favourable for coupling with the solar wind. Events during these two windows tend to produce the strongest displays of the year for observers at Iqaluit's latitude.

May through July is effectively impossible for aurora viewing: the midnight sun keeps the sky bright around the clock at this latitude. No storm level, not even G5, can produce a visible display without astronomical darkness.

Canada's third territory, and its lowest aurora threshold

Iqaluit is the capital of Nunavut, Canada's newest and largest territory by area, created in 1999 out of the eastern Arctic. Its geographic latitude alone doesn't explain its aurora credentials - what does is magnetic latitude, which for this part of Nunavut runs well north of the geographic figure due to the region's position relative to the north magnetic pole. The result is a genuinely low Kp threshold, on par with or better than Yellowknife, despite Iqaluit sitting no further north on a map.

When to go

The season runs November through April, when winter darkness is at its longest. Iqaluit doesn't get true 24-hour polar night, but short winter days still give a long evening viewing window on most clear nights.

Getting there and getting around

There are no roads to Iqaluit - it's fly-in only, with daily flights from Ottawa and additional connections from Montreal and Edmonton. This is a genuinely more demanding trip to plan than most destinations on this site, closer to an expedition than a weekend getaway, and worth budgeting accordingly for flights and accommodation.
