Two companies sail the same Norwegian coast on the same government contract, calling at the same 34 ports in the same order. The choice is not which route to take. It is which ship, and which of the two northern lights promises would actually pay out on a voyage spent under cloud.
The route is identical, and that settles most of the question
Bergen to Kirkenes and back, 34 ports, every day of the year. The service runs on a Norwegian state contract subsidised at NOK 788 million a year, and eleven ships cover it: seven from Hurtigruten and four from Havila. Seven of every eleven daily departures are Hurtigruten sailings, and four are Havila.
Both companies therefore sell the same sky. Same ports, same timetable, same latitudes, same season, with the daily departures split between the two down the length of the coast. A comparison of the two on aurora grounds is a comparison of two ships on one route, which is why the useful questions are about the vessel and the small print.
Latitude is the part of the route that changes, and it changes a lot. Bergen sits at 58°N magnetic latitude, the latitude measured from the geomagnetic pole instead of the geographic one, and needs Kp 3 on the Kp index, the global 0 to 9 scale of geomagnetic activity updated every three hours. Tromsø, most of the way north, sits at 66°N and needs Kp 1. The threshold does not simply keep falling: Kirkenes at the far end needs Kp 2, because the coast turns east at the North Cape and magnetic latitude drops off with it.

The two promises, and the difference that decides payouts
Both operators sell a northern lights promise: sail in the aurora season, see nothing, and sail again free. The two promises use different definitions of what seeing nothing means, and the definition is what decides whether anyone is paid.
Hurtigruten defines an occurrence as a sighting from the ship, recorded by the ship's deck officers and announced to passengers on board. Visibility is the test. A voyage spent under unbroken cloud records no sighting, so the passenger qualifies.
Havila's terms state that the ship determines whether a northern lights event has occurred, regardless of weather conditions and actual visibility. Occurrence is the test. Aurora above solid cloud still counts as an event, and a passenger who saw none of it does not qualify.
That distinction decides who is paid, because of what goes wrong on this coast. Geomagnetic activity is not the binding constraint this far north: Tromsø's threshold is met on 183 nights a year across 15 years of geomagnetic data, none of them in the months when the sky there never fully darkens. Cloud is the constraint, and no operator controls it. One promise is keyed to the thing that fails on a voyage, and the other is keyed to something happening above it.

Ships and cabins, and who each one suits
Havila's four ships are the newer fleet, purpose-built for passengers and delivered as identical sisterships, so the cabin plan on one is the cabin plan on all of them. A standard Seaview Superior cabin runs around 16 square metres, and some of the ships carry cabins with balconies. They sail on liquefied natural gas, a cleaner-burning fuel than marine diesel, with the largest battery packs fitted to a passenger ship: enough to run for up to four hours with the engines off.
Hurtigruten's fleet dates from the 1990s and differs from ship to ship, which is the appeal for some travellers and the drawback for others. Cabins run 8 to 11 square metres, and none has a balcony. The mail-boat heritage is on show throughout: local passengers boarding for a single leg, a coastal service that takes tourists as well as freight.
Newer and larger is not the same as better. If deck time, cabin space and a quiet ship are what matter, Havila has the stronger product, and the hours it can sail on battery are the quietest a deck gets on this coast. If the working-ferry character is the reason for the trip, the older fleet is the one that still has it, and no new-build reproduces a ship that has run this coast for thirty years.

Every voyage starts at Bergen, so the flight that decides the budget is the one into Bergen Flesland (BGO). Fares from the UK swing widely between the shoulder season and Christmas, and it is worth comparing flights to Bergen across dates before fixing the sailing. A one-way port-to-port voyage ends at Kirkenes, which has its own airport (KKN) and direct flights to Oslo, so the return leg is a separate booking on a different day.
Arrivals at both ends land in winter darkness some distance from the quay, and taxi supply at Kirkenes in particular is thin at night. Booking an airport transfer in advance removes the one part of the trip with a hard deadline attached to it.

What this shows on a normal winter night is the argument for sailing rather than flying to one town and staying there. Cloud sits over one fjord and not the next, and a ship calling at 34 ports over twelve days moves through weather systems instead of waiting under one. That is the same logic behind the minibus tours out of Tromsø, at a scale a minibus cannot reach.
Check the strip on the day you sail as well as the day you book. The thresholds are fixed by latitude and will not move, but tonight's Kp and tonight's cloud are the two figures that decide whether the deck is worth standing on.
