Aurora guide
Can you see the northern lights in Poland?
Yes - during moderate to strong geomagnetic storms, aurora is visible from northern Poland. The G5 storm of May 2024 produced aurora photographed across the whole country. Here is what you actually need to see it.
Yes - with the right storm
Poland sits at 52-54°N geographic latitude, corresponding to roughly 53-54°N magnetic. Kp 5 is the practical threshold for the Baltic coast near Gdańsk, which faces north over open water. Kp 6-7 is needed for central and southern Poland. The country is well-positioned compared to western European equivalents at the same latitude because Baltic coastal sites face directly north with no land mass generating light pollution in the critical direction.
The G5 storm of May 2024 produced aurora photographed from Warsaw, Kraków, the Baltic coast, and mountain observatories. During that event, Kp briefly reached 9 - the maximum on the scale. More typical Kp 5-6 events produce visible aurora only from the north of the country, but those events occur far more frequently.
The best locations
Gdańsk and the Hel Peninsula give the lowest effective Kp threshold in Poland. The north-facing Baltic coast provides an unobstructed horizon and minimal light pollution to the north. Kp 5 can be enough from the outer sections of the Hel Peninsula - a narrow spit extending 35 km into the Baltic with sea on both sides.
The Masurian Lakes in northeast Poland offer the darkest skies in central Europe. The lake district sits far from Warsaw's glow, with Bortle Class 2-3 skies in the most remote areas. Kp 5 from the darkest lake shores is achievable. The flat terrain and extensive water surfaces give good northern horizons across much of the district.
Detailed dark sky sites with coordinates are listed on each location page. For a full Poland aurora overview, including forecasts for both locations, see the country hub.
When and how often
The aurora season runs September to April. Equinox months - September and March - are statistically the most active due to the Russell-McPherron effect, which makes Earth's magnetic field more susceptible to solar wind interaction around the equinoxes.
During solar maximum (2024-2026), Kp 5 events are occurring roughly once or twice monthly. Northern Poland gets genuine aurora opportunities several times per year when cloud cover permits. At solar minimum around 2030, these events will be much rarer - perhaps a handful per year at best.
Set NOAA alerts at your threshold via aurora alerts. For context on the current elevated storm frequency, see the solar maximum guide.
