Aurora viewing usually happens in the dark, often in a group of strangers who have all driven out to the same pull-in, hillside, or beach for the same reason. Almost every friction point at a popular viewing spot comes down to the same thing: something one person does without thinking costs someone else their night vision, their photograph, or their access to the land. None of this is complicated, but it rarely gets written down anywhere.
Light discipline
Human eyes need 20-30 minutes of darkness to fully dark-adapt, and that adaptation resets almost instantly under white light. A car's headlights sweeping across a viewpoint as it arrives, a phone screen checked at full brightness, or a head torch left on white mode does not just cost the person holding it - it costs everyone else standing nearby who has already put in the time to adjust.
Flash photography and tripod space
Flash does nothing useful for a night sky subject - the aurora is far too distant and the foreground too dark for it to illuminate anything worth keeping. What it does do is ruin dark adaptation for everyone in view and can wreck a long exposure someone else has just started a few metres away. Leave flash off entirely at an aurora site, including the default flash most phone cameras fire automatically in low light.
Tripod space is the other common friction point. Photos of well-known viewpoints tend to show them empty, but during an active geomagnetic storm the same spot can fill with a dozen cars and twice as many tripods within the space of an hour. Arrive early if a specific composition matters to you, keep your tripod footprint as compact as the shot allows once others start arriving, and be ready to move or share a vantage point rather than blocking it outright.
Private land and access rights
Access rights for the countryside differ markedly between the main aurora-viewing destinations, and assuming one country's rules apply in another is a common way visitors end up somewhere they should not be.
Scotland
The Scottish Outdoor Access Code gives a broad right of responsible access to most land and inland water, including much privately owned countryside, for on-foot access. It does not extend to driving off-road, and it comes with a responsibility to avoid causing damage or disturbance - camping and parking still need to be done sensibly and away from houses.
Norway
Allemannsretten, the right to roam, is a long-standing legal principle covering most uncultivated land, including much privately owned countryside, for walking, skiing, and short-stay camping. It covers reaching a viewpoint on foot but does not cover driving off established roads and tracks, and it asks for reasonable distance from inhabited houses.
Iceland
Iceland is more restrictive in practice than Norway or Scotland. Driving off marked roads and tracks is illegal on Icelandic terrain regardless of vehicle type, largely because the volcanic soil and moss cover can take decades to recover from tyre damage. Stick to marked parking areas and established tracks even where a route looks driveable.
The common thread across all three: a right to walk somewhere is not the same as a right to drive there, and none of these rules override common sense around fences, livestock, or land that is obviously someone's garden.
Drones
Drone flights are restricted or banned outright in most national parks and many other protected areas across Norway, Iceland, and Finland, and the rules vary enough between individual parks that it is worth checking the specific area before travelling with one. Separately, low-altitude drone noise disturbs reindeer, which matters directly in Sápmi, the Sámi homeland spanning northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and part of Russia's Kola Peninsula, where reindeer herding is both an active livelihood and a protected cultural practice. A drone that would be a minor nuisance elsewhere can genuinely stress a herd during calving or the winter feeding season.
Beyond the legal and wildlife concerns, a drone at a shared viewpoint raises the same light and noise problems as any other piece of equipment - a brightly lit drone controller screen or a loud takeoff at 1am affects everyone else on site, not just the operator.
Wildlife disturbance
Aurora viewing happens at night, which is exactly when a lot of wildlife is active and least tolerant of noise and light. At The Neck on Bruny Island, one of the more accessible dark-sky spots for viewing aurora australis, a penguin colony uses the beach at night - keeping noise and light to a minimum there matters as much for the penguins as it does for other viewers' night vision. The same principle carries across the northern hemisphere: reindeer, moose, and other animals encountered near dark-sky viewpoints in Scandinavia and Iceland should be given space and not approached or lit up for a photo.
Culturally significant sites
Some of the best aurora viewing in the world sits within Sápmi, and a handful of towns there are active centres of Sámi cultural life rather than simply convenient dark-sky locations. Kautokeino, for example, has the highest proportion of Sámi speakers of any municipality in Norway and is home to the Beaivváš Sámi Našunálateáhter, the national Sámi theatre. In Northern Sámi, the aurora borealis is guovssahasat - a word that reflects direct experience of the phenomenon rather than a translated term, and a reminder that the aurora has been observed and interpreted here for far longer than it has been a tourist draw.
